How long using DV Studio Pro Can't Post

I have a program about 3 hours long (maybe even 3:15) and I really don't want to go to two DVDs as this is a non money making event ... for them and myself ... but I will probably end up needing about 15 copies.

I can do this on my set top recorder, but wondered if DVSP can handle this. I've only used it twice for short projects as I've done most of my stuff in iDVD in the past ... and I know that won't work.

Anyone created long programs such as these on DVSP?

Thanks -

yes. My advice is a 2 pass render via compressor using the 120 minute setup. Once you get the presets dropped on the compressor timeline, select the video portion, go to the encoder tab in the inspector, click on quality and adjust the bitrate to fit your runtime. Best suggestion is to go a little bit more compressed than the maximum, but by no means should you type a value into the box, unless you dont want your video to sync up. I did this on an 11 disc revival series last year, and it did the trick keeping me from having to use dual layer DVD's for a project I was already not making any money on. Client was happy with the project, and could not tell a difference between the 1 DVD that was within a 2 hour time, and the others that went anywhere from 2.5 hours to 3.5 hours. Another plus to using compressor is that you wont have to encode much of a DVD to get started burning, because compressor does the dirty work for you. also if you put chapter references on the timeline in FCP using markers and add the chapter flag to the marker, DVDSP will see them and make that task a HELL of a lot easier.

Thanks Tim! Don't be surprised if you see a PM come your way in a few weeks. I've only used DVSP twice and my knowledge of it is extremely limited.

I'll bookmark this post so I can refer back to it.

Unless there is very little motion in your video, you will have to compress past good quality to get that much on one DVD. I'm not even 100% sure it can be compressed that far. Spring the extra $15 and use 2 DVDs - even though this job isn't a paying one, having a good quality DVD in their hands might lead to unrelated business in the future. Our very first wedding was the dauther of one of the studios that we do DVD's for their dance recital - we booked a funeral memorial video because the lady (daughter of deceased man) had a stack of our school event DVDs at her home and thought "hey maybe they can help me" - I doubt that these jobs would have come my way if they didn't have a good quality video in hand.

I'm pretty hell-bent on keeping this a single DVD unless the final video will be worse than VHS. Everyone involved is aware of what it's going to take to record the program and it's a unique situation. If I have to I'll do one copy on the set top recorder and see what it looks like before making the final determination.

I've done long dance recitals before, but not sure they've run quite this long.

my client noticed no difference, neither did their congregation. I actually proposed splitting one of the services and they said that would annoy them too badly, so we compressed the video a bit more ant it worked well. THe quality would be on par with using the 4 hour setting on a standalone DVD recorder, probably a bit better. with the 2 pass render in DVDSP, it really works well with smoothing out movement etc. For whatever its worth I have booked several more jobs from members of that church this year.

Re: [Timothy Harry] How long using DV StudioPro - update [In reply to] Can't Post

Just a quick update on the project ... the final video for both nights came in quite a bit shorter than originally anticipated. At two hours and thirty-five minutes, it's still longer than what I had hoped, but certainly an improvement over the three to three and a quarter hours we anticipated.

I'm going to look over the directions here again on Monday and hopefully begin the process of burning the first master. Also ... good to hear that I can start the burn process before Compressor gets done with it.

Thanks again, Tim and I'll be sure to let you know if I run into a snag!

you wont be actually starting the burn process before compressor is through, but you will be eliminating 98% of the rendering that has to be done. I normally design my DVD menus etc while the video is encoding. Your DVD should take a maximum of 15 minutes to put final touches on and burn once your encoding via compressor is complete. Definitely let me know if you have any problems, and I will walk you through it. SVDSP looks really intimidating at first, but it really the most simple DVD authoring application to use once you learn the workflow.

Tim ... thanks for the help ... here and on the phone.

The second video was two minutes longer than the first and it wouldn't fit, so I lowered the bit rate by one tenth, I believe. It worked.

I'm in the process of duplicating, so I'll be able to get this all out ahead of schedule.

Thanks again. I've now learned something new. Cool
