In FCP, what i s Abort ETT/PTV on dropped frames mean? Can't Post

In user preferences of FCP under the General tab, there is a selection to "Abort ETT/PTV on dropped frames. Anyone know that that means?

It means to make sure to not have that box checked. Other than that I really don't know. I always make sure it is not checked.

Sorry but that's terrible advice... You need to know if you're dropping frames in those 2 situations... Which is of course the only time you will see that error message...

Haven't had a problem doing it like that in 5 years now.

??? Dude, do you not understand what that means..? You possibly have a bunch of tape backups with dropped frames... Are you serious in thinking this isn't a big deal? Regardless if you think it's ok to have your tape backups be all screwed up, it's irresponsible to advise others who's work is important to them to do the same...

First of all I am waay to old to be called dude. I did not really ever think about the option in question. All I know is when I have that checked, I always have tape capture abort right in the middle and then have to start over with the capture process. I did not mean to give bad advise and my advise was half tongue in cheek, although I guess it did not come off that way and as it turns out other people have more stable advice.

Bruce you should never get that error message when capturing... that's a different check box and really if you want to capture footage without dropped frames which I would assume everyone would, you should address the problems that cause you to drop frames instead of turning off the error message... Are you on a really old mac? Capturing SD I haven't dropped frames since switching to a G4 and capturing HDV I haven't dropped frames on a G5..

Not an old Mac, everything is very current. You are correct the box I am thinking of is Abort capture on dropped frames. I should not have responded to this post. I also have the ETT/PTV unchecked as well, never knew what it was for, did not care I guess, as I did not understand the need for it. Ron, please disregard my original response.

Yeah the only time I will allow an "abort on dropped frames" is during a PTT. It's critical that an edit being archived to tape be perfect (ie without dropouts). Regarding the ETT feature- I don't know ANYONE who edits to tape on the fly. That's akin to linear editing. It just so happens to be grouped with the same checkbox. Though if I "were" editing to tape I would want it checked.
