I'm still waiting for mine to ship from MAC MALL.
Did you pre-order directly from Apple?

Yeah I ordered directly from Apple. Boy color is a detailed program. The 3D in motion is surprisingly easy. Still playing with the new features though.

Re: [StillMotion] Installing FCS2 [In reply to] Can't Post

Just installed FCS on my new Map Pro.
OMG, the box and disks way a ton. Lot and lot and lots of manuals...I hate to read. Tongue

Well after installing many many disks, 65 GB's worth, I finally launched FCP. Going to take me a while to get used to this kind of interface again (after runnig Vegas n a PC of 5 years), but it shouldn't take long. I did notice (as was forcasted to me in a training on lynda.com) that FCP hates .mp3 files and won't play them (and they were right) as all I get are beeps when placed in the timeline, so all of my mp3 audio will have to be converted to AIIF or WAV either exported from FCP to Soundtrack Pro (no big deal).

Since it took so long to install and setup FCS, I didn't ahve much time to play with it, as I also took a quick run around Motion, Soundtrack Pro (which rocks), and Live Type (which I'm going to love).

When I get a chance, I'm going to review my training DVD's for each again and go for an in depth test drive.

One question for FCP users.
It seems that trainers and Apple recommends capturing by logging all of your footage in as opposed to just capture with scene detection. It would take much much longer to capture via logging, so I usually do one passthrough with scene capture in Vegas, with no problems.
It was also mentioned that there have been possible audio drift problems when one pass scene detection (Capture Now) batch capture is used. Any validity to this?

How do all of you capture your footage (logging or scene detection on pass).

Re: [MLiebergot] Installing FCS2 [In reply to] Can't Post

Michael,

I'm a log and capture kind of person. I like to review my footage and make notes. I find it makes the edit faster. But I think it's more of a personal preference as to whether you log and capture or just capture an entire tape. I've not heard of any audio drift issues with the scene detection. Also you can drop your MP3s into quicktime and convert them to 48kz AIFF files.

I recommend editors get a FCP keyboard to help them learn the program and I think it makes you more efficient. I couldn't imagine editing without one.

Like bill said get the keyboard. It will help you to learn the shortcuts, and your clients will love the bright colors.

One recommendation I can make is INVEST INTO TRAINING MATERIAL!

I would start with the Apple Pro Training series (Should be out by the end of the month) http://www.amazon.com/Apple-Pro-Training-Final-Cut/dp/0321502655/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-7317095-4420729?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1180640276&sr=8-1

If you hate looking at books, (I hate books too but I love the APTS books) you may want to look at the DV Creators.net DVD called FCP Foundations. http://www.dvcreators.net/final-cut-pro-foundations/

For another forum on FCP you need to check out LAFCPUG.org. They run a ton of specials on gear, and get pretty decent prices on training materials. I am not saying that the forums here arent good, but you will probably get answers on FCP faster over there.

I am really looking forward to FCP 6, but I am in the middle of a huge project and I refuse to upgrade mid project. Keep us informed on how well you like the new stuff in FCP!

Re: [Timothy Harry] Installing FCS2 [In reply to] Can't Post

Tim thanks for the reply and info. Very helpful.

I have already started some training online (and ordered a DVD) with lynda.com (Larry Jordan's Essentails series), and it has helped. I have always been a very fast study and can edit very fastly currently in Sony Vegas. So I know, all I have to do is acclimate myslef to the FCP workspace and I'll be fine. The main difference in the 2 apps so far, is that in Vegas I can do all of my editing with key commands basically and only use 1 tool. While in FCP I need to switch to those tools in order to do the same thing (mainly the razor blade, slip and roll tool).

But the reason that I asked about the Capture Now method over logging was that Larry Jordan mentioned that he recommends logging and capturing over Capture Now, because of audio drift problems he has had. Also I noticed in a lot of the reading materials on the web, as well as the FCP6 manulas itself, seem to lean heavily towards log and capture over Capture now. Which is why I posed the question of prefered method of catpruing. I batch pature tapes (with scene detection) in their entirety in Sony Vegas and have never had any isssue, but was wondering if I will have some issues via FCP.

sorry, i was on a roll and forgot to post that part. :) long day

Ok,

I use log and capture, (big fan, was even sick enough to create batch lists in premiere 6.5 back in the day) there are 2 ways you can do this. Log the tape from beginning to end...leave a 5-7 second video buffer at the beginning, or log each individual clip. My process is to log all my tapes, and then I either capture while asleep, out running errands, or my wife does it for me. The real advantage here is being able to go back and recapture off the tape if necessary, which with my luck with tape happens on a pretty frequent occasion. There is a lot less time I spend capturing now that I went P2. It is pretty much limited by the speed of the interface now.

Tim, thanks for the reply.
The only reason that I am hesitant to the log and capure method is that I would have to view and log all of my tapes (average 8-10) which would take me twice as long (I am lazy). I currently do keep a full tape log of each tape captured in my capture utility (in case I need to reacpture my tape). But do a complete tape capture right away, and let the program do the scene splitting (sene detection ON). Then just scroll and edit the complete footage as necessary. Any non-usable clips, I delete during my editing process.

Does Capture now in FCP capture the entire tape and break up the clips (scene detect) accordingly. Then I could just save that captured tape information (tape name etc.) and recapture the entire tape later if needed.

Or would I use Log and Capture like you menioned and just use the tape start time and end time. If I do this method (tape start and stop as the only log points), then would FCP still detect the tape breaks and break them up accordingly. Or would the logged tape juts be one continuous clip?

I guess that I could spend the time logging in each tape (clip) if I had to, but was looking for a quicker method. I can't change tapes while I'm asleep ya know. Wink

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but to my knowledge there is not scene detection in capture now, however if you drop a frame it will split the clip at the drop, other than that there is no detection at least in studio 1, and I believe that it would have been a pretty touted feature in studio 2 if it was there. I totally understand not having the time to log and capture the tapes, The time i spend actually capturing the tapes, I use for time browsing forums, going through tutorials etc, so its not time all wasted, It also gives me some time to storyboard and brainstorm before sitting down to edit.

Then what i steh advantage to capture now. Is it just to capture an entire tape?

I find it real hard to believe and am bummed that an app like FCP doesn't have scene detection for breaks in tape code (ie. paused camera etc.). Especially for DV footage.

Re: [MLiebergot] Installing FCS2 [In reply to] Can't Post

sorry it took so long to reply. I just got done driving from West TX to LaFayette LA today. Oh the joys of driving the equipment truck while thinking of all the kids getting to fly to Florida instead......

Anyway, capture now has its purposes, mainly for capturing something without a timecode source like a VHS tape etc. I also use this to capture from my XL1 in a live performance, so that I can edit my 2 cameras together more quickly. You may want to look over at the LAFCPUG.org site and see if someone has made a plugin for detecting scene changes etc. that may also be a possibility.

Hey Michael,

Once you capture your tapes, select the files in the browser and click Mark -> DV Start/Stop Detect.

Oh Yeah...

Easy way to convert mp3s to AIFF is to use iTunes.

I keep all my songs in an iTunes library. Once they are in your library, set the iTunes importer to AIFF. Then you just need to right-click on the song you need and song you need and select "Convert to AIFF". Then right click on the AIFF copy and click "Show in Finder". Drag the file into FCP.
