Is an external Fire Wire Drive fast enough to edit on Can't Post

Is an external firewire drive fast enough to edit on? It looks like my assistant is going to buy a MacPro and help me with some editing. My plan is to capture the video on my system then copy it to an external drive for her to edit the project on, then simply email me the project file and I can duplicate what she has done on her computer.

I currently have 1 drive bay open, can I simply put a drive in it, copy the video to it, then give it to her to temp install it into her system? Or, will this cause problems. If so, does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks

External firewires are all I use. Make sure their 7200 rpm or better.

Externals are all I use as well ... on my iMac, MBP and G5. I guess it's the 400. Just regular 6 pin to 6 pin.

Ron firewire is fast enough but even faster and better is Sata external drives.

it will work, but make sure when using the FW drive that the deck is unplugged, and vice versa. firewire runs at the speed of the slowest device on the Bus. to get around this, you should put in a $40 firewire card so that you have separate firewire busses

Ron I use these and so far have never had a problem.

http://www.bestbuy.com/...amp;id=1185267958041

They will hold 7 or more projects at one time. I give them to my editors to take home and then return them a week later. I make sure they get transported in a heavily padded bag.

They are 7200 rpm. I am using an older laptop to capture with no Firewire 800 port so I prefer the models with 2 Firewire 400 ports. I have edited with both 400 and 800 and never noticed a difference.

Ron external FW drives are fine as long as you are editing SD/HDV and not HD video.

If you are editing HD (PreRes/DVCPROHD) footage then it's best to be working on external SATA drives. External SATA Raid even better.

I don't completely agree. FW800 is pretty snappy.

So I might be better off buying this $75.00 PCI Express host adapter and that way I can purchase the usb/fire wire 400/800 / eSata external drives so my assistant can connect it via firewire until she decides to purchase a host adapter also.

This is the one I was looking at.

Bruce, do you have the intel MacPro? What host adapter are you using?

I'm really thinking he best way to go is to get one of these:

Hey Ron

This is where I got my drive enclosure. I went with the 5 bay case and you just need to plug one cable into the case and inside it has a router which then gives you the ability to plug in 5 satat drives. I also got the sata card from them too, but the link for the sata card you posted is good as well.

is that the same card you bought, just from a different place? I do need PCI Express right?

Which 5 bay eSata enclosure did you get? They use standard SATA drives righ? the e just stands for external? Are they hot swappable?

I was talking about capturing and working with ProRes or DVCPROHD.
Working with HDV footage is fine for FW hard drives.
But if you are going to be capturing and working with ProRes or DVCPROHD footage right from the get go, then you will want to work with an external SATA hard drive, preferably an external Raid Array.

Here ya go Ron. Really quality case that they sold me. Don't look for any way to contact them though. Products are good, just no way to ask them questions.

Man that's a sweet looking 5 drive enclosure, and only $100 more than the one I was looking at that only held 2 drives. So is it quiet? My PC over here with 7 hard drives and fans installed sounds like a beauty shop.

Thanks for posting this - I didn't realize that other devices are an issue. I'm going to re-arrange some stuff and see if this fixes my problems - misrable response time, constant color-wheel-of-death, etc. I am editing HD, so this still might not help, but it is DEFINITELY worth a try!
