Joel, any suggestions for adding HDs to a G5 tower? Can't Post

Joel,

I remember vaguely you having some sort of contraption for adding HD's to your G5 a while back but I can't fond the post.

I keep running out of HD space round here and I want to add 2 more HD's somehow to my Quad, but it only has 2 slots (stock). Any suggestions?

Hello Bill,

I used the SATA Dual Drive kit from Granite Digital in my Dual 2.5 G5. It comes with a SATA card and mounting bracket for two additional drives for only $99. It works pretty well. The drives mount in front of the processor fans. This was working out great for me but I started having problems when I ran compressor. It seems that the drives blocked just enough airflow to cause the machine to overheat and the machine would go into sleep mode. I made my own bracket out of some simple hardware and moved them to the space in front of the card slots. It has worked great ever since. Most people don't have any issues with the drives mounted in front of the processors. I mainly wanted the drives for additional storage and not for media capture. But I have used them as media devices for video projects with no problems. If your main intent is storage for media then you might want to look at a better SATA card solution like the Sonnet Tempo.

I have no idea about this product but I remembered seeing it when I saw this thread.

I just have an old G4 1Ghz dualie that is stuffed full of HD connected via Gigabit to my G5. Than my wife has an editing station too.

Only $99? You Mac guys make wayyy too much money Laugh. I spent $100 on an entire aluminum case complete with killer 540w Antec PS and it handles 12 drives with ease (I have 8 installed, 4 of which are 15.3k rpm seagate scsi weapons on raid...very fast, and very hot). It has never overheated once, likely due to the 1.5 million different fans preinstalled Laugh Plus I think aluminum helps with heat too.

If I had a Mac I'd have to spend another $300 (on top of the premium for the mac in the first place) just to equal this setup.

Darren, Darren, Darren. Scroll up to the top and read the title of this forum. If I didn't know any better, I'd say you are trolling for trouble.

Hey Bill,

I added a G5 Drive Bracket and an IDE/ATA PCI card. I had all these ATA drive sitting around. It works great.

The controller is from SIIG

http://siig.com/...atid=103&pid=419

(If you need RAID or SATA they have those too - just make sure it says 'for Mac'.)

The drive bracket is from here:

I used some longer ATA cables to get to the drives:

(You can still get them even though it says 'unavailable'.)

For a while I also took the DVD burner out and put it in an external enclosure. Instead of the single port ata cable that connected the burner to the motherboard I put a master/slave cable on and hooked up two more ata drives. They sat in the space vacated by the burner perfectly. For a while I was running 7 drives internally. The throughput from the drives in the burner slot were just as good as the SATA and ATA on controller card.

Take a look at this I have been using it for about 2 yrs and it works flawlessly. They are external but your G5 will see them as internals and they work like internals and you can change on the fly.

To me it's a lovely sight. Like greasy hands = money to a mechanic, this = money to a computer geek. Function over form..and man does it function.

That's nuthin, it's the front office with only four machines. You should see the computer room where mission control is. There's wires. There however will be no photos of that - National Security Laugh
