Lens flare - how the heck does it work? Can't Post

I've used "lens flare" quite a bit in Photoshop, but I have never gotten it to work in FCP. I've read a manual fro FCP, but it only mentions lens flare as one of the effects listed. I've tried the help menu, I've searched online... I just can't get the dang lens flare to work! How do you do it? Am I missing something? I drag it onto the clip in the timeline, but then what? How to I make it to actually appear?

Any advice helpful, thank you.

The lens flare filter in FCP has always been a mystery, ever since FCP 1.0. Consensus is that it was an effect the programmers never really "finished" working on. Why it ever made it into the software (or why it's never been taken out for that matter) is a mystery. You're not missing anything...it's never worked!

Hmmm, I've never really used it but I tinkered with it for a few minutes and got a pretty neat looking flare. Seems like the first thing you need to set is the brightness slider just under the spot info setting. Then tinker from there.
