Leopard: Who's upgrading this week? Can't Post

Hey, Apple is unleashing the Leopard this week, just wondering how many here are planning an early adoption.

Apple has posted a guided tour, as well as a list of all 300 new features

I downloaded the tour earlier this week, but only had time to watch a couple of minutes. I guess I need to watch the whole thing and decide. I know that I don't NEED to upgrade, but if it can make life just a little bit better ... I might.

Of course ... I don't like to be the first one on the block to pick something up, so I'll probably give it a little time.

It hasn't been a rule but I've always seemed to wait until new computer purchases to get OS upgrades. I'm hoping for quad core laptops in Spring so I'll probably wait until then to try out Leopard.

Just downloaded the guided tour here at work- getting ready to watch. I'll be at the Apple store friday to pick Leopard up. It's going on my Macbook Pro first. I'm doing to do a fresh OS install along with FCS2. I'll follow suite with my Mac Pro desktop as soon as my current wedding project is finished.

Guess I'm the only early adopter?.... wish me luck. Angelic

Just finished watching the guided tour. My thoughts...

Time Machine- while the interface is slick I don't like the idea of having to connect an external drive and powering it up every time I turn my Mac on. Though you can probably use an internal drive, they just didn't specify in the tour. I wonder what kind of performance hit the system will take with this kind of active backup scheme.

Spaces- Very very cool! I think I'll get a lot of use out of this one. I often have FCP, Soundtrack, Email, etc open at the same time. No more expose to change windows. I wonder if expose "show all windows" will even still be available. It might be easy to get carried away and run too many programs at once chewing up all available ram. Tongue

Email- I love the data detector feature. Very slick. I also like how it sets up your Gmail and Yahoo address automatically (simply inputing your login/pass).

iChat- The new iChat looks incredible...especially the fact that you can share anything that works with Quicklook. The ability to share each other's screen is going to be incredible! You can even go in and work on someone's FCP project. Imagine the possibilities! I wonder how much latency it will have...it might be hard to do something that requires precise timing (ie Video editing). Cool

Updating- the way they make it look is you can install it without having to reformat, effectively keeping all your bookmarks, music, photos, email accounts, etc. Though I always worry about upgrades being buggy. Anyone have any experience with "upgrading" their Mac OS as opposed to doing a fresh install?

I wont be but its only because at the moment I am in the middle of another big project. It would sit on my shelf for 3 months kind of like FCS2 did this summer. This was posted in the Dallas FCP forum by a great guy named Ned Soltz. He has been very helpful to me in the past with problems/advice on FCP and the Mac, so I put a lot of value ot what he recommends. Here it is:

Quote
Reminders:

1) It is unwise to upgrade OS or any software for that matter while in
mid-project.
2) Clone your start up drive to have a bootable pre-Leopard system. That
means A) Run Disk Warrior so you are not cloning a drive with directory
errors B) Repair permissions (despite what some genius said) C) Clone using
either SuperDuper 2.1.4 or CarbonCopy Cloner 3.0 (now supporting Intel) D)
Boot from that clone drive and run some apps just to make certain your clone
is good
3) Here is a new one that I will do.... Since Leopard now includes some kind
of font management beyond just FontBook, disable any font manager you have
such as Suitcase prior to the upgrade. That might require a reboot of your
system just to make certain it is off.
4) Remove any cute little system haxies because these are the kinds of
little apps that historically cause the most trouble.
5) Remove any external drives or other unneeded firewire or USB devices just
to be safe.
6) In other words, start with as clean and basic a system as you can.
7) Prior to beginning upgrade, pour one large glass of Scotch. Drink half
the glass prior to inserting the Leopard disk. In the event of upgrade
failure, drink the other half of the glass. Follow that with the remainder
of the bottle. In the event of upgrade success, drink the other half of the
glass only when you have booted successfully and run a few apps

I'll upgrade one of my machines AFTER I clone the existing drive. There are a lot of compelling features.

I have a question in reagrds to my existing Bootcamp system.
Does anyone know, if I install Leopard, if I have to reinstall Bootcamp and the XP partition.
Or will Leopard just do a seamless install and my XP partition, programs and all, will be alright as is.

I hate to install everything all over again, on MAC and PC side.

I would assume that if you did an OS upgrade, you'd be OK, since XP lives on a different partition, but I don't know. Your best bet would be to call an Apple store after Friday and ask.

I like the fact that it has to be an external. I'm debating upgrading my MBP HD to a 250 (full install requires 9 gigs...YIKES, but an external drive makes so much sense for backup.

.

I wonder how much latency it will have...it might be hard to do something that requires precise timing (ie Video editing). Cool yes, this could really be the killer feature of Leopard- on the demo it was lightning fast, but if it's anything like my experiences with VNC and the like, it will be a disappointment

I always do a fresh install on OS upgrades. If nothing else, it makes it feel like the machine is running faster.

Hi Glen,

Its pretty but is it more than just eye candy? Are you finding anything that could speed up what you do?

I wasn't referring to any eye candy- I think it's funny that they have PCs on your network represented as old CRT monitors with the infamous Windows "Blue Screen of Death" lmao

Ack. You're right! I've never been the victim of a pc crash, but I've played with the spinning beach ball of death.

I am finding it to be more than eye candy.

The addition of Coverflow into the OS is very useful (far more so than iMovie) and Quicklook is a useful component that just finishes it off.

I find Spaces to be very useful for my workflow of having multiple apps open at the same time. The fact that you can bind apps to a certain space makes it much more effective where you can work without thinking about it.

Time Machine is a very simple way of doing something that most people ignore unfortunately and if you STILL don't back up regularly with this tool then you are rather hopeless.

I am not personally sold on Stacks just yet. It is more limited in my opinion than simply right-clicking on a folder in the dock.

Networking is improved and more integrated in the Finder. The previous methods of working with other computers were problematic in approach. The new implementation is much more useful and requires fewer clicks - of which I am a supporter. I am especially happy with the shared desktops ability.

Now, some feel it is "snappier" or "faster" than Tiger and I am not sure of that but, it certainly doesn't feel slower. I will have to see some benchmarking to see if there is any difference in speed.

Overall, I am really happy with it. I think you will find many 3rd party devs coming to the plate with more reasons Leopard can be useful. There is a lot of new tech under the hood that could directly benefit our industry in the future. However, I am probably most pleased with the stability I am seeing. It is running very well and we are seeing a lot fewer compatibility problems than I expected. Apple should get credit for that - take note Microsoft...it can be done.
