Looks like I'm going to upgrade - NEED HELP Can't Post

Since it takes the latest version of FCP to be able to download the CF cards ... looks like I'm going to have to give up FCP 4.5 and upgrade to the latest and greatest.

I'm not sure how much things have changed over the years. I've got FCE on my MBP as well as my iMac. I then have FCP 4.5 on my G5. I know that I can only run FCE on one computer at a time. Is FCP the same? I would like to install it on my G5 and my iMac.

Anything else I should be aware of before purchasing the upgrade?

Thanks -

not too many changes, some additions, but nothing has really changed in the way of layout. You can only run 1 license at a time, but unplugging a networkk cable takes care of the check, I have done it a couple of times while compressing a big file, and needing to ingest footage, but thats about it. If you need 2 copies a lot, buy 2 copies.

More questions -

Here's the scenario ...

ZERO HD experience and close to the same amount of knowledge about HD. I had a buyer for my cameras and took advantage of it while they still had value.

I purchased the Z7 and it will be here next Tuesday. I'm holding off on a second camera for right now, because I want something that I can use to feed tapes to the Mac and use as a second camera ... mostly for the balcony and from a tripod at the reception with a light.

I keep hearing things about Prores cards or something. Again ... no knowledge. Is this something I have to add?

My understanding is that I have to have the latest and greatest version of FCP to capture the footage from the CF cards.

So I upgrade fcP ... what else to I have to purchase to make HD work ... as in capture? It appears that both my iMac and G5 meet the requirements for the upgrade in software.

I have a show to shoot in a couple of weeks that will obviously be delivered in SD. Do you shoot in HD and then convert or do you just shoot it in SD?

I'm starting to freak out a bit over this transition, but that's one reason I'm doing it now. I'm afraid that if I keep waiting I'll never get caught up.

BTW ... I don't know anything about terms like bit rates, codec, and stuff like that. If you can ... keep it simple for me.

I actually considered jumping ship with Apple and going to less expensive editing system, but then I start a whole new learning curve, so that's probably not good.

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

I don't know if you have ever signed up for lynda.com, but they are a great resource of online and offline training for practically everything.

They just released HD Workflows for FCP today, so your timing could not be better.

1. I am not aware of prores cards, but it is my understanding that the G5's cannot capture prores from a camera direct as in doing a transcode from HDV to PrRes....not enough umph in the system is my understanding, however I understand that you can capture HDV and then do the conversion using compressor or your choice of program for that conversion. Not sure how old your G5 is, but mine was retired last year to do my books and store the MP3 collection because it was not fast enough to handle what I was throwing at it. It had a good 3 year run, but it was a dog when it came to rendering anything in HD, and letting it crunch 1 hour of video into DVD format at best quality took 2 days to do. With my new mac Pro, it can be done in about 4-6 hours.

2. yes you will need the latest version of FCP.

3. Honestly as I said before, you may want to consider purchasing a mac pro and either Ebaying the G5 or giving it a new set of tasks. It will do what you are wanting to do, but it will not do it in any sort of a hurry.

4. If final delivery is done in SD, I shoot in SD. If they decide they want HD later I reshoot in HD and charge them accordingly. Weddings are obviously an event that cannot be reshot, but I ask my clients beforehand if they want HD or SD, and let them know that if they choose SD, there is no way to go back and make it HD. TO do HD wedding video, I charge 400 Extra to cover the cost of archiving to a hard drive. For corporate vide I charge 200 an hour for HD and 150 an hour for HD.

5. Now is the time to transition. The new product line is great, however you might want to hold on additional purchases until next week. NAB is happening in Vegas Starting I believe on Sunday, should be some new products on the market that could make life easier.

6. If you decide to bail on apple, you should seriously look at EDIUS, but I would not touch any other editor but those 2. Keep in mind that cheaper hardly ever means better, unless you are comparing AVID to FCP, in which case the cheaper option also happens to be the better option.

Re: [Timothy Harry] Looks like I'm going to upgrade [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks Tim.

My G5 is a Dual 2 GHz with 5 GB SDRAM running on OSX 10.4.11. I have about 189 gig free.

The iMac is a 24" 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo w/4 gig RAM also running on 10.4.11.

All of the above means nothing to me. Unsure

I guess the bottom line right now would be ... other than upgrading FCP ... I wouldn't have to purchase anything else to edit my footage. Does that sound correct? (This somewhat assumes that at least one of my computers is fast enough.)

Thanks again for the help.

By the way ... thanks for pointing out the breakdown in pricing for archiving.

And Michael ... thanks for pointing me towards the training material.

Re: [Sparky] Looks like I'm going to upgrade [In reply to] Can't Post

no problem....

The G5 may not be quite quick enough, I had the dual 2.5Ghz G5, and it now runs quickbooks, Itunes and is my web browser. The iMac should work for now though, you would rally want to throw more RAM in it. You may get into the HD more than just a project here and there, so that would be the time to purchase a full system like a mac pro. try it now like it is...if it doesnt work for you....upgrade. If it does work for you then keep truckin along until it doesnt. In other words, if wedding video does not pay for what you want, try doing a few corporate gigs. One $300 commercial for a client led to a contact with an oil company that threw me a $20,000 video.

I have no patience when it comes to computers. Video is my FTJ and waiting costs me money, so I do not like to wait for anything. Im sure my G5 would have probably been OK for a year or so more, but my impatience and huge workload made me take out a business loan to buy a full mac pro system with AJA capture card, external monitor, RAID array etc. It has allowed me to do so much more than wedding video, and as soon as the next oilfield training check comes in, it is completely paid off, within the first 11 months of owning it. If all goes well my whole business should be out of debt for everything by November. If video is your FTJ, make it pay for itself. Your time is money. the more time you spend waiting, the more money you are costing yourself. In other words. If you are not bringing home what you want in wedding videos, do some branching out to other areas. I love doing weddings, but I could not make them float my company in my market. I branched into doing commercials for an ad agency in town. that led to doing commercials for other people. One really cheap commercial for a non-profit that no one else in my area would do for the price they needed, led to a contact with an oilfield company that got me involved on a $20,000 video. That video is paying off my editing system, even with the expenses of producing it. Make video work for you....dont work for video.

Re: [Sparky] Looks like I'm going to upgrade - NEED HELP [In reply to] Can't Post

Sparky, as far as the upgrade goes my suggestion would be to reformat the drive, do a fresh install of the latest OS, make all the necessary updates, repair permissions, and then install FC Studio. Repair permissions and then download and install all the updates available for FC Studio. And finally repair permissions again. This procedure has always worked for me and produced a very stable editing machine.

Re: [Sparky] Looks like I'm going to upgrade - NEED HELP [In reply to] Can't Post

I am far from technical, feel free to pm me and I can get my husband to give you a rundown - but -

We have the new Sony "PMW-EX1" camera that takes the flash cards rather than tape. I installed the appropriate software on my 4 year old G5 running FCP Studio, and was able to download the video with no issues at all. It really is very cool, I'm looking forward to using this for some of my SDE work!

As far as I know, you still can't run the software on multiple computers - I know there are "work arounds" with network cables and such but I haven't had any success with them personally.

If this is what you're trying to figure out, let me know. If I'm totally off base ... well, I tried to help! Blush

Re: [videogal] Looks like I'm going to upgrade - NEED HELP [In reply to] Can't Post

I think the cards will be a great help for SDEs. I know I wished that I had it last December. And it good to hear that it's running fine on your computer.

I just ordered the update on FCP. Obviously at 4.5 I haven't updated for quite a while. I don't know if it ships with a tutorial or not, but I'm sure I'll be spending some quality time with it to try and figure some stuff out. I'm no "power user." I do basic editing, but will enjoy learning how to use Studio Pro as well.

As for different computers ... that's not really a major issue. I would like to install it on at least two computers and possibly my MBP if it works out, but it's very rare that I need it running on two at the same time.

Thanks for the info.
