Re: [MLiebergot] MacPro RAM Upgrade [In reply to] Can't Post

Wow... information overload Wink I just recently learned you can't buy a MAC at Walmart. I just want to connect 2 monitors up for right now. I'm not even shooting in HD yet, so don't think I'll have a need to edit in HD for a little while yet.

But I appreciate the infor, gives me more to dream about!

FCP just isnt capable without leopard. once you add leopard into the mix, it is my understanding that the 64bit stuff in the OS enables it to take full advantage of the cores. Get that RAM third party from someone like OWC. those guys are great! THe only reason I ordered my RAM through apple was because I needed the computer fairly quickly, and I had a company set it all up for me in their shop to test it before it came to my office. I paid extra for it, but it was worth me not having to hassle with the companies sending back non working parts etc. My banker was also more comfortable with me having the apple RAM.

You will love the Radeon graphics card, it makes working in m otion so much faster, and now that you have a computer capable of working in motion you should really take a look at it. I used it for titles in a commercial I did 2 weeks ago and I am having people all over the area call me to quote commercials because they like the titling i did for my client. DUla link DVI basically means it will drive double the number of pixels that a single link DVI card will do, making it capable of running a 30" monitor or larger. It does not mean you get double the number of displays, although that would be freakin sweet!

Connect the 19" samsung through DVI, all you will need is a cable. THere is a dramatic difference in picture quality going from analog to digital there. On the TV, you might want to look for an HDMI to DVI adapter. it would allow you to run it digital, giving you a cleaner signal there as well. You can get DVI cables and DVI to HDMI adapters over at my favorite cable store on earth http://www.firefold.com If you need HDMI cables, this is the place to get them. I run my HDTV and my parents stuff on their cables. I cannot tell a bit of difference between their $7 HDMI cable and monsters $60 HDMI cable.

FCP itself will not scale well up to the 8 core but, Compressor will utilize all 8 core and that is really where you want the horsepower anyway is in compression times. Personally, I find the 4 core to completely adequate for my work. Instead of fronting for the cost of the octo and putting all that power in one machine, I would be more inclined to set up a render farm (couple of imacs or Mac minis) and then continue to be productive on my workstation.
