Mac Pro died Can't Post

My power mac was off when I got up this morning and now it will not boot up and seems very dead. Anyone have any ideas of what I should check?

Is it that there is no sign of life, or does it try to boot but can't find the System files and sits there with a question mark?

If the former, start off by checking that everything is properly plugged in, and that your surge suppressor and circuit protector haven't flipped. If you are not getting any reaction when you try to boot, then it could be the internal power supply.

If it tries to boot up but can't find the System files, try booting off of a DVD and then backing everything on your boot drive so you can do a reformat and clean install.

Do you have AppleCare? If so, it should cover you if the Mac is less than 3 years old. Get the patient to an Apple retail store in the Milwaukee area or Madison.

open it up and press the little button near the battery on the motherboard. that will reset it. if not, take it to applecare.

Actually I took the battery out. It is totally dead. I ordered a new one and hopefully that will fix it. thanks.

Bruce that could be a more serious problem. PRAM batteries should last over 5 years. Keep track of the date you installed that and see how long it takes to die.

How long have you had your Mac Pro?

Hard to believe but it is 5 years old almost to the day.

Okay, the title of the thread is your Mac Pro died. The Mac Pro is only 2 years old. I just re-read the post and you called it a Power Mac. So I'm assuming it's a G5 now.

So everything should be cool then. Slap a battery in there and get another 5 years out of it. LOL

I get very confused on the proper names of the macs that come out it seems every 2 months. I have a mac g5 and a mac pro intel. One is 5 years old and the other is just a couple years old. Of course I am older than dirt.

Well put a brand new battery in it and still nothing happens when I press the start button. Just silence.

That's what it sounds like to me. Can one simply order a power supply for a Mac and replace it their-selfs?

Doesn't look like something I can do myself. On a pc I would be able to get right in there, but noooooo not on a mac. I was going to take this one down anyhow, just needed a reason. Now I have it. Thanks for all the help.

Re: [Ron Priest] Mac Pro died [In reply to] Can't Post

YES THEY CAN!!! I worked for Apple for about a year and a half. I don't know how some of the newer machines are, but at the time of the G5 Poswer Mac and the G5 iMac, Apple was on a crusade to make their computers completely user repairable. That's why you can put in and take out parts in those two machines with little or no tools.

So the plan was to make it so that just about everything could be replaced by the owner except the motherboard. If a customer called up and said their optical drive wasn't working, there was no need to send it in or take it to a store. hey would just mail you one right out and it could be done in about 5 minutes, no screwdriver needed.

Bruce, look at how easy it is to swap a hard drive in the Powermac G5. I haven't gotten a Mac Pro yet, so I don't know if they have changed that mindset, but the G5 Tower and the iMac G5 are pieces of industrial design art.

I am not sure I totally agree. I think you can order the power supply and DIY.

This is also interesting...

I agree Kenneth they are a work of art. I think this machine is around 5 years old now, and I am probably not really going to mess with it too much. Power supplies really look pricey (big surprise) and it is not even a machine I work with much anymore. It scares me more than anything that a mac can just stop working like this. It would be an entirely different story if it was my editing machine. Thanks for the help and advice.

Thanks for the links Brian. My serial number is just a bit bigger than the ones they have listed. I think 5 years old now, so it might be time for the apple graveyard if there is such a thing.
