Making public_html file appear as volume? Can't Post

Weird question: I'm not a dot-mac member, but I'm wondering if its possible to have an icon on my desktop alongside my hard drive icons that would allow me to drag and drop to my host's public_html file? Does that make sense? As it is I have a droplet with Fetch that I can click to open the Fetch window, but its not as convenient as a having it as a volume that is always available. I have Fetch and Transmit and YummyFTP and none seem to have this ability to represent itself as a volume like an idisk does.

There is not one that I know of that will work with a public webserver. There is one you can use with amazon S3. I will keep an eye out.

HA... I lied.

In Finder, click Go->Connect to Server. Enter your FTP address in the Server Address line. Click connect. It will ask for your username and password. In Leopard it mounts under "Shared" in the sidebar.

EDIT: Maybe not... you can view but not read or write.

OK.. found a working solution.

Have to install two things... first

macFuse Core - http://code.google.com/p/macfuse/downloads/list

then...

MacFusion - http://www.sccs.swarthmore.edu/users/08/mgorbach/MacFusionWeb/

That wold be pretty nice to be able to do that to my own web-server! I'll watch this thread as I would like to know the answer to that question.

Not to change the subject, but I need to find an FTP program for my Mac, which one do you suggest? Are any of them free?

CyberDuck is free and decent - http://cyberduck.ch/

Recently I switched to Transmit and it is great - $29.95 - http://www.panic.com/transmit/

I'd never done a "BWAHAHAHAHAH!" evil scientist laugh until that little blue FTP icon appeared on my desktop as a volume. Works without a hitch. Thanks again.

I had problems with Transmit - it would drop big file transfers or transfer them twice. Went back to Fetch. Recently tried Yummy FTP and I like it better than Fetch but I just don't want to lose my flow I've got going now by switching.

Well poo! I just download Transmit 3.6.4 and purchased it. Do you remember what version you were having trouble with Joel?

Oh so by doing this I wouldn't need an FTP program?

I like Transmit Ron. It is a good program and a good purchase.

I had Fetch for a while but it seemed to drop the connection and it did not have a resume feature like Transmit.

Yes, I haven't had any problems so far with Transmit, thanks for the tip.

I'm not trying to set up that other method you found above. I've download the files, and started MacFusion, but I can't get it to display my FTP site in the blue icon as Joel was describing. I did get it to mount but it never showed up desktop. Any suggestions?

Let me ask you this, once you install MacFuse Core, there is nothing else you have to do with it right? It's not like you have to run it before running MacFusion right? I mean, when installing MacFuse Core, it said it was suceffully installed. And I did download the verion for Leopard

Thanks.

go to finder -> preferences. Under the general tab makes sure connected servers is checked. Then look on your desktop. It should be there. If it is you can drag it into the sidebar of an open finder window. The next time you connect it will show up in the sidebar of a Finder window.

The same thing happened to me.

Yep, thanks Brian, that worked. The only problem I have now is that when ever I try to open a folder on my ftp site it says "The folder "name" could not be opened because you do not have sufficient access privileges. Mad

Beats me. I thought I had set my password up alright, it I'm able to access everything with Transmit??

I've used Fetch ever since it was developed at Dartmouth as freeware. It now costs $25 but is quite stable and easy to use. You can try it free for 15 days. http://fetchsoftworks.com/...iD5pECFRE0FQodDA7t-Q

I have used Transmit for a good while now and have not had any problems. It is my personal favorite ftp program.

Well that good to know! As I was purchasing it, the web page mentioned the benefits of purchasing it would unlock it's full capabilities... but I could never find where it told what it's limitations were until you purchased it??

As far as I know, it was a time demo. It offered all of the features for 15-30 days
