Need help buying a HD MacPro system Can't Post

I've been given a budget of $10,000 to purchase a Mac Pro video workstation to edit HD: (CPU/Monitor/Drives/Breakout Card).

What would you suggest?

I'd suggest you get some more cash in your budget. I just purchased a new system for my "day" job. It cost around $17,000. This was based on the Quad Core 3GHZ MacPro with 8 gig of ram, 2 500 gig internal drives, 2 23" Cinema Displays, FCS, AJA KonaLHE, and a Ciprico Media Vault U320-R. There's some other pieces of software and accessories in there too. This does not include things that I already have like a NTSC monitor and audio mixer.

Describe what flavor of HD you mean? IT can go from a $4,000 setup on up to the sky. Need more input Smile

I might be able to get a little more money added to the budget. Plus I don't have to worry about including the prices for the HD deck and HD video monitor as our engineering dept will be ordering those.

This is what I've put together so far:

Dual 3.0 Dual Core Xeon Mac Pro
2- 750GB internal drives
Quad Channel 4GB Fibre Channel PCI Express Card
8 GB Ram
ATI Radeon X1900XT
1- 23" Apple Cinema HD Display (They won't let me get a second display, so I'll have to use my current CRT as a secondary monitor)
$8566.00 (Educational Institute Pricing)

BlackMagic Multibridge Extreme w/ PCI Express
G-Tech G-Speed 3TB Fibre Channel RAID
$8299.50

total $16795.50

Question - What kinds of cabling am I going to need for the fibre channel RAID? I've never used one before - only used SATA or ATA drives.
The G-Speed includes a 10' (3 m) LC to LC Optical Cable - will that work with the Apple Quad Channel 4GB Fibre Channel PCI Express Card or do I need to order another cable?

Thanks in advance

Todd

Todd, I've not used Fibre Channel storage so I don't have any experience with it's cabling requirements. I'm using SCCSI storage with an ATTO UL5D card. Try posting over at the creative cow.

That sucks that you cant get the second LCD display. With the educational discount they aren't that expensive. Here's some other things that I'm getting with my system:
Logic FCP keyboard
Squeeze 4.5 Powerpack
Boris Red 4
Tannoy Reveal Audio Monitors

I'm expecting delivery any day now from my vendor/system integrator. I can't wait! Good luck with your purchase.

Todd, why not add "Glen's Apple 30" Cinema Display" to your signature. I'm selling it for near 23" Cinema Display pricing. PM me for details!
