New to FCP have question Can't Post

I know just about enough of FCP to be dangerous. I have actually produced some projects and have saved them in final cut pro documents. After a period of time, I'd like to delete them but when I try to drag them to the wasre basket, it goes right back. My question is: How do you get rid of the old stuff to make room for the new stuff.
Thanks

Please explain - you are dragging what things from where to the trash? Are you trying to delete the FCP project file or media from your capture scratch folder or items from the FCP browser or what?

Re: [wayne s] New to FCP have question [In reply to] Can't Post

it sounds like he is trying to delete the FCP documents folder in his documents folder, that unless you set the drive to point elsewhere will automatically get recreated everytime you restart FCP. I PM'ed him my contact info and would be more than happy to run him through an effective media management technique that will make setting up and keeping track of projects very easy.

Re: [Timothy Harry] New to FCP have question [In reply to] Can't Post

When I begin a new project in FCP, I first click on file, new project, file, save project as, documents, final cut pro documents, and then I title it and then start my project from that point. When the entire project is complete and before I export to Quick Time movie, I save it in final cut pro documents. Then I export to Quick Time Movie. When I look at all the projects that I have saved in final cut pro documents folder, I can't delete the individual projects. Is there a better work flow than what I am doing? I don't have any problems except I can't delete all the saved projects individually. Should I quit saving everything in final cut pro documents? Where should I save the projects? Your help is very much appreciated.

Re: [wayne s] New to FCP have question [In reply to] Can't Post

Wayne:

Are you doing individual projects for each part of an event (such as one for the pre-ceremony, one for the ceremony, and one for the reception) and then combining them into one project from which you export your QT movie? If so, then the combined project may simply be referring to the individual projects, so that they can't be deleted.

My suggestions:
1. Create different sequences within a project for the different parts of the video.
2. Save the project on some drive other than your boot drive (where I presume your Documents/Final Cut Pro Documents folder is located). Create a folder for that event on that other drive, and put all your supporting files into that folder and sub-folders. Using this procedure, each time you start working on a new project (or come back to that project after having worked on another project), you will have to start off by going under Final Cut Pro/System Settings and set your scratch disk to your project folder. That will cause Capture Scratch, Audio, Audio Render and Render (for video) folders to be created in your project folder. Export your QT file to this project folder. Save your DVD files (video, ac3 audio, DVD Studio Pro project, label artwork, etc) in this folder or a sub-folder also. I even bring copies of any music or other audio files into this project folder. By doing this, you have everything in one place, and aren't filling up your Boot drive. You can archive the drive with the project folder when it becomes full, and go right on with another drive in its place. Very easy to swap out drives on a MacPro.

Hope this helps.

Re: [thatmdvideoguy] New to FCP have question [In reply to] Can't Post

Allan,
Thanks for replying. When I start a new project, I save it under a new sequence (example Jessica's Wedding) and then I start creating new individual projects under that sequence in tabs such as Pre Ceremony first, and save to fcp documents and then export to quick time movie. I repeat this process for the Ceremony, Reception, and Highlights. Everything is saved under final cut pro documents and then exported to quick time movie for each individual project. I believe all the individual tabs are under the main sequence of Jessicas Wedding. The export to quick time movie is saved to a folder created on my desktop titled "Jessica's Final Assets". I haven't tried your suggested work flow yet but it makes sense. I will give it a try. Thank you for your help.

Re: [wayne s] New to FCP have question [In reply to] Can't Post

sorry it took so long to reply.....it has been the week from hell.

Here is my workflow....note this is not what is taught in the books, but it works, and makes media management and archiving a snap.

I create a folder on my drive with the project name when I start. Inside that folder are a couple of other folders. 3 of them are created by directing FCP to use that folder for capture scratch, render and audio render. In addition I create another folder called Resources. In that folder are my project assets that I bring in (Voiceovers, Music, Scxripts, Music, External Audio etc), as well as a folder I call AVOUT. all the output files go into the avout folder. I also store the project file on the drive in the first level of the folder. The pain in the butt part is redirecting the FCP preferences everytime I work on a different project, but when its time to dump the project, I dump the whole folder and its all gone, no remnants, and It also makes it where I dont accidentally delete another projects files.

Re: [wayne s] New to FCP have question [In reply to] Can't Post

one other thing I forgot to mention is that all this is stored on a RAID5 array under the desk, so its fast and safe, but if you are doing SD, or HDV, single drives should be ok for most everything. It is accepted practice, and highly recommended that you not use the same drive that the program is installed on as your working drive. It really kills the performance of FCP.

Tim, Thank you for replying. That is very good advice you gave me. I am starting to understand how it works. My problems from understanding some time stems from many years of editing with AVIO which is really not desk top editing. Going from Avio to Mac and FCP is as fifferent as night and day. Again, thank you very much for taking the time to help me.

Hi Wayne

May I direct you to 2 different execlent sources of training for Final Cut Pro. One route is the FCP training series available on Lynda.com. It's well worth the $25 monthly subscription.

The other training source that I highly recommend is the Apple Pro Training Series. That's how I learned FC. I've purchased just about all of them that pertains to FC Studio but the one you would want to start out with it the one written by Diana Weynand titled Final Cut Pro 6. If you go through the lessons step by step you can be a FCP export in no time. Here's a link for this specific book:

http://www.peachpit.com/...aspx?isbn=0321502655

After you finish that book, I'd recommend "Final Cut Pro 6: Beyond the basics.

http://www.peachpit.com/...aspx?isbn=0321509129

Their both excellent books, I know because I've completed both of them.
