Positioning Talent to Fly; greenscreen Can't Post

I'm shooting two kids against greenscreen, flying over city, through space but I'm not sure how to best position them: laying on a cart or table with chromakey fabric covering table? Any comments, suggestions appreciated...

Lighting is everything when chroma keying! You need that green (or blue) to be as visually even as possible, no shadows, no shading.

Yes, have them on a stool or something that is covered with the same green (or blue) material, or painted. Again, make sure that the furniture they're on is lit as evenly and to match the background as much as possible.

Remember that DV is the absolut worst media for chorma keying. It can be done, but due to the limited color space, it's a trick to pull off really well.

As for shot angle, that all depends on the shot angle of your imposed background. Are you looking down on the city form the east? Then the kids have to be shot looking down on them from the east. If you catch what I mean.

The ideal would be to get ahold of a ReflecMedia ChromaFlex rig for the background and use painted supports for the kids. This would minimize the shadow issues greatly. Suspending them on cables would be really nifty but that gets tricky.

Ben is right that DV is iffy for chroma keying, but it can be OK if you're well lit and have a good keyer. Make sure you use the FCP smoothing filter before keying.

Thanks for replies. I have a large (12X15) hanging (foambacked) green screen. My lighting setup is two 500w softboxes, one on each side about 6' from backdrop - and a larger 1000w softbox on talent. I've had decent luck with FinalCut keying and in some case much better luck using Boris Continuum (adding matt choker to key seems to do the trick).

I'll probably cover a table with green fabric and have kids do their superman act on that. I now realize I'll have to plan backdrops to shoot correct angles. Seriously considering renting some old Superman movies to check out the angles....
thanks again!

Superman Movies! There ya go! And the new ones, too!

I highly recommend the book, "Apple Pro Training Series; Advanced Color Correction in Final Cut Pro 5". It goes through the subtle tricks that make FCP really pull off great color keying.

I like the BCC3 filters for this too... when things get tricky, I'll whip out their Linear Color key or the Two-way. Sounds like you have a handle on it.

seriously consider matting out Chris Reeves - why hurt yourself? Wink

If you have After Effects, use the Keylight plug-in that comes with it in version 6.0. It is 100 times better than Final Cut Pro's chromakeyer.
