Powerbook G3/400 with Firewire2go DV...need help! Can't Post

Greetings. First off let me appologize for being ignorant, although I have used powerbooks for years I am new to DV and have a problem.
I can play back video from my Sony DV camera and am using the Apple Video Player vers. 1.7.3 to do it and things appear fine on the screen of the powerbook. The software allows me to record but the quality is very poor (frames seem to overlap and have an awful lot of what looks like injected noise. Audio is non-existent and occasionally shrieks at you). The software will not allow me to capture images returning some kind of error....help! Is the drive too slow? is there a new version of the software?
I have a powerbook G3/400 with a 6GB internal Toshiba drive (what it was shipped with). I purchased a Sony DV camera with a firewire port and a firewire2go card. I have updated the firewire drivers and am running QT 4.1. The OS is 8.6.
please email me if you know something and appologies if I am wasting your time/bandwidth.
