Quicktime Mov Files - Need help! Can't Post

Hi everyone,
I'm a PC user I do not own a Mac. I had a subcontractor do an event for me and they have given me a copy of the event in HD Quicktime (Mov format) in a data format on a dual layer DVD. Now none of my PCs show that there is anything on the dual layer dvd. However, when I put it on my Mums mac laptop it showed me that it had a Quicktime Mov file (6.6gig). My mums laptop could not play the file as she needs to update her codecs or something.

Now.. I tried to connect my external hardrive to her mac and drag and drop the file but it threw a message and would not let me do it.

How can I get the file off this dual layer DVD so that I can transfer it onto my pc and make a blu-ray disk. I have dvdit pro hd so I'm sure I'll be right but I just need to know how to get the file off the data disk.

Any ideas or suggestions from you Mac & PC users would be greatly appreciated!

Cathy

Howdy,

The problem may not be the file itself but rather the way the disc was burned. There are formats that are mac-only, pc-only and ones that can be read by either. The problem you had trying to transfer the files from your mom's mac to your external drive was because you can only read from hard drives formated to be used with with a PC. You can't write to them. It seems like this is what you can do:

Take the drive to you mom's computer and format it as the mac's default format.

Transfer the data off the DVD

Before plugging that drive into your PC install this (there is a trial version available):

http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive/

Plug the drive into your pc and the mac-format will be recognized.

Whether your editing app will be able to ingest the footage will be the next chapter...

Hi Joel.. thanks for your help & post.

Is there any other way than to do what you have suggested? I don't really want to have to format my hard drive and make it Mac Compatible just to get this and then have to install another program on my pc to get it in. I don't want to cause any conflicts with my machine and my editing program.

I use Avid Liquid 7.2

It is really wierd as he gave me a DVD that contained Quicktime files from the SD version and I can see all these just not the one on the dual layer and he says he did both disks the same way. Very interesting.

I did notice that when I dragged the file to my mums mac desktop and created a zip file... could I burn that zip file onto a dvd as data and try that? Does making a zip fle reduce the size of the original file? as this file is 6.6gig.

It is possible that, with MacDrive installed, your PC may be able to read the DVD directly.

Hi,
I installed the mac drive on my laptop and it worked... it showed the quicktime file that was on the dual layer disk. I have copied it to my desktop BUT now when I go to open it it says additional codecs are required to play this file. It takes me to the download for all these codecs but which one should I download to play the file? all of them? or would you know which one I would need to play the file type. I have checked in the properties and the file type is a "MooV" and the creator was "KeyG"

ARgggg now that I closed the download page for the codecs... it doesn't prompt me to go back to the codec page so I can't post the link regarding all the codecs that were on offer to choose from :(

Open the file in Quicktime Player. Then from the View menu, choose Show Movie Inspector. It should indicate the file's codec even if you don't have the codec installed.

Hi Chuck,
This is what it says:

Format: HDV 1080i50i 1920x1080, Millions 16-bit integer (Big Endian), Stereo, 48.00 khz
Movie FPS: 25.00 (I'm in pal land)
Playing FPS: 25.00
Data Rate: 26.54 mbits/sec
Current Time: 00000000 (all zeros)
Duration: 00:34:10.24
Normal size: 1920x1080 pixels
Current Size: 1920 x 1080 pixels

So.. from the above can you work out what codec I need?

I spoke to the guy that did it and he said maybe I need Quicktime Pro to play it?

It will open the other quicktime files on a dvd -r disk and play using quicktime.

Thanks for all your help
cathy

Cathy, the pertinent into is in the first line:

Format: HDV 1080i50i 1920x1080, Millions 16-bit integer (Big Endian), Stereo, 48.00 khz

So its HDV. QTPro does not necessarily give you additional codecs. You need an application that handles HDV natively, like Premiere Pro.

Since you are in contact with the originator of the footage, an alternative to all of this may be ask him to provide it in a format you can use directly. Good luck. :)
