Restore Discs won't load in G4 Can't Post

I have recently purchased a 933ghz G4. I want to do a clean install of OS9 and 10 using the old discs from my former 733 G4 that has been junked. I am using disc 1 of the 4 restore cds. It starts up (after restart and holding down c button). The old smiling mac shows up and the progress bar moves to about 1/4 of the way but OS9 never starts. I have also tried to install os 9 from the os9 disc and get the same results. I am wanting to upgrade to tiger but I am afraid that I can't install os 9 since some of my programs require it to be installed.

These disc have always worked with my 733 and they are what shipped with them.
Any help is greatly appreciated

Wow, old machine, old discs. You can download a generic OS 9 install from Apple support site. Although it will take some digging, I know of someone who recently found it. I'd skip OS 9 and just get a set of OS X install discs and do that. Skip 9, don't ever even think about it. It's just not supported anymore, period.

The reason I need os9 is that I own a copy of Photoshop 6 with an upgrade for Photoshop 7. I have to install ps6 using os9 and then upgrade to 7. I also have a hp scanner that requires the same thing. I do all of my video editing in osx. but need 9 for the older software.
I will look for the os 9 install you mentioned. Although, I've been trying to find an upgrade to Quicktime 6.5 and the links no longer are available at the Apple website. I'm not sure I want to upgrade to Quicktime 7 due to previous problems when making upgrades with qt and fcp.
Thanks

I sympathathize with your desire to salvage your old software, but OS9 is indeed a dead horse. You owe it to yourself to just go to OS X and be done with it.

As far as the apps go, I'm running PShop 7 on my system, so if PS6 will load on Tiger, you're on your way. If not, perhaps you can get a copy of Photoshop Elements - it's more affordable and has most of the essentials. We recently put up an obsolete HP scanner on my son's iMac G5 without any difficulty, so I'm betting the scanner thing can be solved.

Good luck.

My experience with Macs is that you can't use restore discs from one machine on another, unless they're the same model. Usually you'd get a 'Cannot restore from this disc' error, so I'm suprised you were able to boot at all.

If you're looking for OS9 strictly for your Photoshop upgrade, try installing PS7 directly onto the new machine in OSX. It should ask you if you're upgrading, you'll respond that you are, and then it should ask about the previous version. Adobe usually has the option of just entering the original serial number on the older software, followed by the upgrade serial number, w/o having to install the older version first. I've encountered this quite a lot as I've upgraded Macs and hard drives over the years.

So, give that a try, Hopefully it will work. If not, my best suggestion would be to purchase a straight copy of OS9 from eBay or a reseller. You should be able to get one for $30 or less.

As for the older version of Quicktime, it's probably still somewhere on the Apple site, you just have to do some digging. Apple usually keeps that stuff available, it's just harder to get to. Also their forums are an excellent resource for tech support.

Good luck!
