Simple Color Correcting Tutorial Can't Post

Hi All,

I put this together for friend and thought others might pick up a tip from it. Its very basic color correction in Final Cut Pro:

http://www.EventVideographer.com/...color_correct_in_fcp

If anyone has any problem viewing the movie let me know. I'm still fine-tuning the screen capture app and I've already got a better audio recording technique for the next one. If you have an idea for a tutorial let me know - I'll be glad to share how I do things...

ya, thanks for sharing, Joel. I do much the same as you, except I haven't bought the Joe's filters...yet. Do you get a lot of use out of them? Any in particular that you like. I downloaded the demo pack way back, but for some reason didn't buy.

How do you like the time bender? That's one feature I could use from time to time, so to speak.

Hey,

I probably overuse color glow. I also use SoftSpot, but only to a very subtle extent to center attention. I only just recently figured out FCP's Time ReMap tool. In fact it was from a tutorial that gave me the idea to try to do one myself:

I may look closer at Time Bender to see if its easier than Time Remapping.

You figured out time remap!?!?

So your the one...

;)

Timeremap is by far the most frustrating thing I've tried to use in FCP...

Thanks for the CC tutorial, it was awesome. Showed in a very simple way what the 3 way does...

So here's the big question...what if you don't have anything white in the frame?

Cheers,
Scott

No kidding. There has got to be a way to make that easier to wrap your head around.

Good question. Eyeball it I guess. I'm really going to make a concerted effort to manually WB more often. Right now I let it go on the tungsten or outdoor settings even if they aren't right completely right. That way I know the cameras will match in post with the same CC filter on them.

Joel I can't view the clip right now from this computer at work (no QT installed and the proxy won't let me install it new). However the time remap in FCP should work like it does in Vegas.

The definitive difference between the two is FCP adjusts the ramping so ALL the material still fits in the clip your applying it to. In other words if you have a clip 5 seconds long and slow it down to 50% speed (which would essentially make it 10 seconds long) it wont allow the "actual" end of the clip to extend past the logical end of the event in the timeline. It has to ramp the speed back up to allow it to end in the same overall time-frame.

Vegas lets you raise and lower the bar, add points etc...all the while allowing the length of the clip to change without being constrained by the physical length of the event in the timeline. Working this way gives sooo much more control. As it is the time remap tool in FCP is useless (to me at least).

Hey Joel,

Thanks for posting, that was a great tutorial! I'm wondering why I've been hanging out in the members only?

The best thing I learned with time remap is that if you hold down the option key, you will only move one frame at a time. That has made things much easier. I was getting very frustrated over/undershooting specific frames.
