Slow File Import Can't Post

Greetings:

Any advice on a nagging problem with file imports on my G5/FCP Suite?

It takes several minutes to import files. Large or small, it takes at least a couple of minutes, if not longer. The beach ball spins and spins until I finally see the "choose" button.

I never run two applications at once. It's a G5 with 2G ram and dual 2G processors. I've cleaned out my hard drives and usually run only one with a project.

Any thoughts? This is making my workflow slow to a crawl.

Thanks,
Rich

It's because your posts are deleted... Tongue

Seriously, you're right that you shouldn't be seeing any significant delays. A 2GHz G5 dualie may no longer be "state of the art", but it's miles from slow or obsolete.

I'm puzzled by "The beach ball spins and spins until I finally see the "choose" button." - Choose button? Are you capturing using the Log and Capture window in FCP?

Clearly, I'd like you to post more specifics, but I can state categorically that if you're capturing from a deck or a decent camera using FCP's Log and Capture facility, the worst it should get is when the camera/deck is searching a specific timecode. Cameras can be pretty slow in this since they're not designed as transport decks.

Other possibilities for a slow-down exist, and the list can get long, so please post more specif info on how you're set up, your hardware, OS level, etc.

Sounds a lot like a problem I had when I first updated to Tiger. It turned out to be a problem with Spotlight. Tell me this: If you navigate using the finder in column mode to the same file, do you get a spinning beach ball there as well? If so, you've got a Spotlight problem, I think. I have Spotlight disabled on my Mac which is a major pain because you can't search for anything, but it's better than a slow computer. It looks like the program I used to disable Spotlight is no longer around, but here's another one:

Good luck.

Re: [Renny] Slow File Import [In reply to] Can't Post

Renny,

Thank you so much for the help. I downloaded the file from the Apple site and installed it about an hour ago. After the restart, the problem was cleared up and now I'm back to importing files quickly and easily. Last night before I installed "Spotless" it took me four minutes to import a file. Four minutes of just sitting there looking at the beach ball spin.

Thanks again.

Hey cool! I'm glad it worked, Rich. I thought my computer was a goner when I first had that problem. It took a while to figure out.

About Spotless, have you had to disable Spotlight completely? I have Spotlight disabled completely and it's kind of a pain not being able to search for things. I can't even search in my mail. Are you able to do a search on your computer? I may have to try Spotless myself.
Thanks,
Renny
