Thank You and Help Again Please Can't Post

While stuck in Maui (a real tough spot to be in by the way). I contacted Bruce Cleveland for help. He in turn put a shout out to all his V.U. friends and got me the help I needed. Thanks also to Dan McMahon who took time to call me with tech support an hour before he left for his own wedding shoot. So thanks to all that helped. I'm finding this forum is as benificial as Bruce has always said it was. Since then, I have become a member and now am in need of further assistance.

I was wondering if it is possible to switch an uncompleted project from one computer to another computer. I need to free up the laptop for another job.
I created a project on my MBP laptop using 20 gig's of the laptop's hard drive and another 140 on an external drive. Using fcp5 with the update for the intel chip.

I dragged all my captured footage from the laptop to my 2.5 G5 using the standard fcp5. I also dragged over the wedding .fcp icon and thought I'd be able to open the project on the tower. General Error 41 appears when I attempt to open the project.

I thought that I would just need to reconnect the files in the original project (now on the G5) to the files transferred over from the laptop.
Any thoughts? Both mac's are using fcp5, but the laptop is the MBP and has that intel stuff in it.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

do both of the computers have the same version of FCP? If this is the case you may want to see about upgrading your FCP version to the latest (5.1.4) You should be able to do this without too much of an issue. If you are on the same versions of software on both of the computers, it is time to trash your preferences. This is pretty easy to do using a program called FCP rescue. (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/14729) trash and restore the preferences. If you have favorite transitions and layouts, you may want to backup using the backup tab first. THis is one of the first things to do when you troubleshoot a problem in FCP. If that does not work, I would suggest searching on the forums at LAFCPUG.org. There is a little bit of everything there for FCP, as well as users who are much smarter than I when it comes to technical problems within FCP.

Thanks Tim,
I understand my problem lies in that the laptop I created the project on is the universal studio 5.1.4 version.
The G5 tower I was trying to transfer the project to was using the older 4.5 version.
I will try to upgrade the tower and give it another try.
Thanks again for your help.

as long as your are not using them both at the same time. I believe the licensing permits you to have it installed on both computers (At least that was the way I interpreted it). there is no need to keep 4.5 on your G5, especially with the features that 5.1 has over it.

Re: [Timothy Harry] Thank You and Help Again Please [In reply to] Can't Post

I tried installing the universal after updating to latest version of QT.
I was unsuccessful and got a message that the OS was not up to date.
I have 10.3.9 installed and found there was no upgrade available for it.
The install paperwork states that you must purchase Tiger 10.4 or later if upgrading from 10.3 panther.
I went to the apple site to again look for an upgrade for 10.3.9. but found I have the latest version already.
Am I suppose to be able to install the universal with 10.3.9 or do I need to upgrade to Tiger?
Thanks again.

ah that would definitely be your problem. I would hate to say it with leopard being so close to out, but you will need to upgrade to tiger first. cost is 129 bucks for it, but you might try looking at mac mall and some of the other discounters for better prices.

Thanks Tim.
Would you suggest waiting for Panther?
When is it suppose to be released?

Well the release date for panther has been delayed to sometime in october, or at least that is the rumor. If you can afford to wait until then it will definitely be worth the upgrade for the features you get. I will most likely be buying a whole new Mac when leopard comes out, but that is because I want to add the AJA Kona 3 to my system and I cant see buying a card that wont work in 2 years when I have to upgrade from a G5 because it is at the end of my acceptable lifecycle for a computer (I typically wont use an editing system for more than 5-6 years before performing a major upgrade)
