This Gets Ugly Can't Post

I'm reposting this from the Members Only Forum in the hope that I can get some help:

I've used Flip4Mac before to get perfectly good wmv files for my website, but this clip has me befuddled. As it plays, the color progressively gets more bizarre.

http://www.thatvideoguy.net/help/JanetSor3.wmv
2 pass VBR
Quality=90
Bit Rate=302kbits/sec
15 frames per sec
Input=Interlace-Upper first
Output=Progressive

I had a similar problem with another clip over the last few days, but not as pronounced. I have also tried encoding on two different Macs, so it is not a glitch in the Flip4Mac software.

For comparison, here is the Sorenson 3 compressed QT file from which the wmv file was exported:

It'll be an especially happy Thanksgiving weekend if I can solve this problem.

Re: [thatmdvideoguy] This Gets Ugly [In reply to] Can't Post

I know a few people have looked at this, but no-one has chimed in. Meanwhile, on a forum over at Flip4Mac there was a comment about a glitch that causes transparent cyan and magenta blotches of discoloration. I've confirmed that it is only a 2-pass VBR problem, and doesn't happen with 1-pass.

The F4M moderator replied:

We're working to fix the "blotch" issue.

You can download this version which will work fine in the meantime.
(go to http://www.flip4mac.com/fusetalk/forum/messageview.aspx?catid=38&threadid=1393&highlight_key=y&keyword1=color to get the link)

I've done the reinstall, and things look good now.

Hope this helps someone else here.

That is really strange. I have not had that happen to me yet with F4M. I typically have issues with fades from black. Sometimes F4M encodes the forst frame of the clip as a still during the fade. I also sometimes get A flash to a white frame at the end. I encoded your clip using these settings:

Export using WMV 9 Standard
2 pass VBR Const.
Quality 90
Bit Rate 400
Key every 5.0
Input Progressive
Same size
Rate 15 FPS
Output type Interlace-upper field first

Here are the results:

Bill:

Thanks. That is what I expected to see, based on my earlier use of F4M. I don't know why it suddenly started doing this (on two different Macs, unless it is a result of one of the security or other Mac upgrades that I try to keep current). Their "fix" version gave me good results.
