Time Machine - Pretty Sweet Can't Post

Finally purchased an external drive to use with Time Machine. It's pretty sweet! Sure gives a nice sense of security!

Doesn't have to be an external drive; I'm using a drive in one of my internal slots.

Yeah, I know you told me that before, but... I didn't want to use up an internal drive for a backup disk. I've only got my #4 slot left to fill and I want it to be as big of a drive as I can put in there. My first drive (mac system drive) is only a 250 gb drive, my 2nd drive is 750 GB and my 3rd is a 1TB drive. So I'll probably put another 1 TB drive in there unless they come out with a 5 TB drive!! LOL

So anyway, I bought a 500 GB external eSATA/ FireWire 800/400 /USB 2 Combo drive and dedicated it to Time Macnine. My 250 GB systems drive only has 114 GB used, so Time Machine should do well with a 500 GB don't ya think?

I'm configured with a 500 Gb boot drive (168 Gb free), a second 500 Gb drive for projects, and using the 750 Gb drive for Time Machine (51 Gb free). I figure I will fill in the 4th slot when this project drive is full. Then, as the fourth drive becomes full, I will start archiving the drives just as I did with external drives when I was using my G4 Mac as my editing machine. It is so easy to remove or add drives in the Mac Pro!

One plus with your arrangement...you can unplug the external drive and store it away from the Mac to mitigate lightning strikes, fire, flood, famine, vermin, or other biblical disasters. I wonder if you could actually move the drive to a different Mac and work with the files?

Do you mean boot up with it on a different Mac or just runt programs on it? That would be pretty cool if you could.

I like going into Time Machined and pick the first backup date just to watch the windows fly through space and then back again. It's quite entertaining to watch!! Cool

I did mean to move it over to another Mac to use it there. I just tried running some programs from my oldest backup; they wouldn't launch. OTOH, clicking on a DVDSP project opened it up, so if you had the program installed on a second machine (say a PowerBook), then it appears you could use an external Time Machine Backup Drive to transfer the latest version of the project and files.

I just discovered the other day what is produced when you click on the Time Machine icon in the Dock! How neat! I'd like to find that background...could make an interesting background for the DVD menu for a couple I have one who used a Star Trek theme for their recessional Laugh).
