WWDC Keynote-No mention of Blu-ray Can't Post

Well 4 more months past since macworld. We thought Blu-ray support for apple would be announced then. Oh well, we thought. I am sure it will be in June at WWDC. Well guess again...still no support for Blu-ray. I had been playing with Premeire for mac, but it did not do quite as much as fcp, so I am stuck with fcp and still no blu-ray.

I am just as disappointed but I did not look for it at WWDC. I knew this was going to be the iPhone show.

Yeah I guess I knew it too, just hopeful. Guess I am going to have to keep Premeire just for Encore so I can burn blu-ray. I gotta feeling though when they do support it, it is just going to be small news and an update.

Well... Im not sure Apple is ever going to support Blu-ray. I kind of have the feeling as others have already mentioned somewhere on these here boards, that Blu-Ray is never going to make it. I've got the feeling most of us will be providing our clients with an HD download in the not so far future. Be it Apple TV or whatever.

That is one theory that gets more accurate with time. Would be nice to see some of my HD footage on a real blu-ray platter. I did burn a couple with toast that were HD-DVD, but time on them is really limited to 3 minutes or so.

Yeah Ron, I have this sneaking feeling that streaming media is going to wind up being the norm down the road. Either via intrenet download from Blockbuster etc. or Apple TV. No media wat so ever, simply your computer will wind up being the central hub for your houses entertainment center.

Cameras: I do use them.
Audio: Yes, it does come with audio if you like.
Software: I am learning...
Support: I need all that i can get.
Computer: MAC BABY!

By the time they announce it I'll probably have to buy a new computer to get it going. I'm not sure I want it that bad just yet.

At this point I can't decide who I am more mad at - Warner Bros. for selecting the inferior product and ending the war, Sony for winning the war and then not lowering prices on the players, or Apple for not giving us support.

Eventually download will be the norm, but not anytime soon. There simply isn't enough bandwidth available to support it. ISPs are already pushing to charge heavy downloaders more and in some cases have started throttling back transfer speed for those downloading large amounts of data. A battle for "net neutrality" is rapidly developing. Personally, I think many of the big ISPs are pushing for limits because they recognize the potential for delivering media over the internet and want to control it and reap the potential windfall. This would not bode well for companies like Apple who do not control the pipeline.

Optical delivery is going to be with us for a long time, and blu-ray is going to continue to gain acceptance. The key is the price of standalone players. Once players come down in price and more and more HDTVs are sold, new buyers will almost undoubtedly opt for them. The format is also very important to the big studios, both for its potential for sales growth and enhanced protection against copy and piracy. Expect a big push next X-mas.

When it comes to certain types of productions, such as wedding videos, there is always going to be a desire to have a physical copy that can be stored. The problem with downloads is that they end up on a hard drive that is inevitably going to fail. Great for rentals. Not so great for ownership. At some point, people are going to want to be able to store their keepsake in a manner that will last.

Yes, I can see your point, and a good one it is. I'm not quite ready to shoot everything in HD just yet, still have a couple more cameras to buy before I can make the switch but I sure hope it's not too much longer until Sony decides to get on the bandwagon. I can only imagine how frustrating it is for those who have been shooting in HD for a while now. I haven't been on the Mac for very long, but for the most part I feel Apple tends not jump the gun on things. It appears for the most part when they do decide to do something, they at least give a good attempt to do it right the first time. We can only hope this is the case with Blu-ray.
