What is Apple Qmaster? Should it be in the StartUp folder? Can't Post

Apple Qmaster? It was part of the FCP Studio install and now resides in my start-up folder...does it need to be there. When I boot and am waiting for the apple logo to pop up on the grey screen. Right before the apple logo pops up I get a Folder icon with a question mark on it for a split second. It never had this delay in booting before the install of FCP Studio.

I'm wondering if it's the Apple Qmaster in the startup folder that's lagging it a bit? Any ideas?

I wouldn't move it. Qmaster is required by several programs like Compressor and Shake. Qmaster handles background queue tasking of renders, etc. I've gotten the question mark on boot-ups but you may want to check your start-up disk in Preferences, and make sure your FCP capture settings are pointing to mounted hard drives, not network drives that may be off-line.

Well the question mark only pops up for a split second before being replaced by the apple logo. Overall it boots pretty darn fast, so I can't complain there. I was just concerned that the quick folder with "?" during boot didn't mean that I'm being bogged by something during the post/boot process.

Regarding the Qmaster folder in the Start Up directory. I've already removed it. I didn't remove the program- just whatever it imbedded in the Start Up folder. If this causes problems down the line when I'm actually using Compressor (I'm still tying to learn the basics of FCP) I'll do a complete system restore to the laptop and re-install FCP Studio if need be.

So would you say it's normal to see the "? Folder" for a split second before booting? It doesn't do it the 20" iMac I just bought my gf this weekend. BTW, she's estatic about it. It my as well have been an engagement ring. Wink

Tell you what- I went into system preferences and re-selected the Max OSX drive and chose "reboot" and I haven't gotten the question mark folder before booting ever since. Thank you kindly for the advice. Much appreciated- you da man Mr.Focus. Blush

With OSX, I've never had to reboot unless it was for a software update, otherwise I just put it to sleep. My desktop averages 1 reboot per month while my laptop hasn't been rebooted in 6 months.

I don't leave the laptop on because the Mac Book Pro gets mighty toasts on battery power. Shocked

The question mark folder has been around for a decade+, all it meand is that they system was deciding where to boot from. I see it routinely on one of my G4 systems that has a SCSI system drive running off the PCI. The system expects to see an ATA boot drive (there isn't one) so it puts up the QMF as it looks for the correct volume. I've also seen this happenwhen there is a bootable CD/DVD in the optical drive.

As D4rK mentioned, Qmaster is a network rendering dispatcher for short list of supported apps (which doesn't currently include FCP.) Qmaster isn't required to run Compressor, it's required if you want to network your encoding across multiple copies of Compressor that reside on other Macs on your LAN. Ditto for Shake, Lightwave, and a few more.

Great thanks for the clarification. I'll check it when I boot it tomorrow however tonight after going to the Startup Disk menu under System Preferences and re-selecting the Mac OS X drive and rebooting it hasn't done it since. (I've also removed Qmaster from my startup directory)

I get the ? mark folder on my iBook too but it doesn't really affect anything, but usually what that icon means is that its searching for a HD with an os on it. Like was said choosing your startup disk is a good place to start.

So she likes the iMac eh? pretty sweet! Does she have knowledge of Macs and the OS? Hope she continues to like the OS and not get frustrated because its different than XP. So you plan on getting engaged?

OS X is very intuitive and she's a quick learner. I've been showing her the in's and outs of the interface though I don't know the real meat and potatoes (that's what my Lynda.com "Beyond the Basics" training CDs for OS X are for) Wink

I'm sure the longer she works on it the more likelyhood she'll find questions to ask. Right now it's dual booting with XP on a small partition because she needs XP for her at-home dayjob. As soon as her company offers the various programs in a Mac version (which they claim will be "soon"). I'll go ahead and relinquish that partition BACK to OS X where it belongs. Cool

4 years! What are you waiting for? JK, we dated for 6 1/2 years before we got married. It amazes me how fast people get married these days. btw, who will be taping your wedding? You will need to let us know right away, we could all show up and do a battle of the cameras event. If you wanted to edit it, it would give you lots to choose from. Sorry a little ot.Wink
