Can someone please explain to me why the FCP Timeline starts out at 1:00:00:00 instead of 0:00:00:00 ?

Ron ... you can change it. I'm not at my mac, but I think it's under User Preferences ... timeline. You can change it there.

Hi Scott, yes I realize you can change it, but I'm trying to understand why it is the default setting to stat at one hour? Got any clue?

The reason for that timecode start is for broadcasters. Any tape submitted for broadcast must start at 1:00:00;00. The network spec may call for the projects to have 50 seconds of color bars, 6 seconds of slate and 4 seconds of black preceeding the first frame of the actual show, so the actual show can't start at 0:00:00;00 or else the leader would be negative, which wouldn't be good.

Hi Joel, thanks for that explanation. But I'm still confused, time code 01:00:00:00 is actually 1 hour, correct?

Yep. So the color bars and black would normally start at either 58 minutes or 59 minutes depending on what the station specifies for the leader. In User Preferences > Timeline Options you can reset the sequence to start at zero.

I would change that in my prefs but I am so used to adjusting the hour off on my timeline I am afraid I would really get messed up.
