batch capture files Can't Post

I'm trying to capture miniDV tapes to a separate capture drive in a way such that if the capture drive fails and I lose all of my captured video files, I can recreate them using by recapturing the files.

I assume the best way to do this to log each clip, then batch capture ... and then if the drive fails, I can open the project (since the project file is stored on the system drive), select the clips I want to recapture, then batch capture them. Is this correct?

Correct. This is a benefit of taking the time to log and capture your footage. I had a client lose their master but needed a new DVD produced (they lost the original DVD too). They still had the original tapes. So I opened the old project and batch captured the footage. Did a render all and the project was exactly as it was.

Thanks Bill, just what I needed to hear ... out of curiousity, where did you keep the client's old project file(s)? I never considered permanently saving a project file but after hearing your story ...

David,

The project file is small. I have a folder on my start up drive called projects. Inside this folder are sub-folders for various clients.

Hi David,

Do you capture whole tapes or pick and choose shots to capture?

Hi Joel: I capture whole tapes.

One other thing: I like to use the scene detection feature, which automatically creates a new clip when it detects a start/stop. I'm assuming that these clips also get logged ...
