iMac DV SE won't recognize JVC DV camcorder... ideas? Can't Post

Greetings. My new "JVC GR-DVF 31" camcorder and iMac DV SE (OS 9) are not on speaking terms. When connected via FireWire (2.2.2), iMovie 1.0.2 reports "Camera Disconnected" everytime I try to get video from the camcorder into the iMac. Help!
JVC says that Apple needs to provide a software patch to accomodate that model camera, and in the meantime I should buy a FireMAX FireWire card ($300 from ProMAX) and Premiere 5.1. Apple's in complete denial, saying the setup already should work fine. I've tried a whole slew of voodoo tricks (extensions on and off, plugging in and out, etc.)... no luck. However, I was able to get some video out of my camcorder and into a friend's G3 running Premiere. I can't do the same on my iMac using Premier 5 Demo, although I've never really used the software before. Any tips on how to get started with Premiere?
Finally, I need to make my setup work without spending much more. I don't want to buy Premiere or Final Cut Pro if I can't be sure they'll work. Any ideas out there? Has anyone ever had success porting JVC DV signal to an iMac DV SE using iMovie?
Thanks! Michael
