new 3.06 imac versus macbook pro for editing? Can't Post

Looking at the specs and comparing these two machines and it appears that the new 24" imac blows away the macbook pro. Any comments about that? I am looking to sell my new mac pro tower and was thinking to buy a mbp but saw the ads this morning and am wondering if I would do better to go with the imac. Larger display, faster processor, can upgrade to a 1 T drive. Just seems like a much better deal to me.

Cheers,

Hi Ivey,

If portability isn't your first consideration you should go with the iMac.

Faster, bigger screen, more storage and more.

I am not sure that the iMac will blow away a MBP but, it does offer some nice upgrades but only because of the limitation of notebooks. However, I am wondering why you want to get rid of the MacPro? I have not seen a more productive computer in my life.

I am getting rid of it because I am moving to the UK and want to avoid shipping charges. I thought I could buy something more compact and be able to carry it with me rather than shipping. I checked into shipping by containers on ship of all my office stuff but it takes up to 12 weeks for delivery. So, I decided just to make the switch and not interuppt my work

Ah...that makes sense.

Personally, I find the advantages of the MBP to outweigh the small performance advantages of the iMac. In day to day use, you will not see any standout differences. The main advantage of an iMac for me would be the larger screen but, that would become a shipping issue as well if you go with the 24". An ideal situation would be a MBP with the samsung 500gig internal drive, FW drives for video storage, wireless keyboard and mouse and an external monitor for when it's sitting on a desk. Even the WD 320 gig hd is a really solid amount of internal space.

I have the 20" iMac to run the business and encoding but I would never use it for editing. The graphics card usn't the best so there are occasional redraw problems. The RT Unlimited relies on the graphics card so clips sometimes get down-rezzed so bad during playback that it appears the camera is moving when it's not, and if the does move you might be able to tell that it moved.

I also don't like the screen. It's a glossy screen with a slight dark tint to it, which is obviously not great for color grading, because your colors will never be true to a TV.

Hi Ken,

Everything I've read says that RT Extreme relies on the RAM and the CPU, not the graphics card as does Motion for real-time. Do you remember where you read about the graphics card being important to FCP?

Nope. All I know is I have a Dual 2 G5 that plays back video with no issues and a Dual 2 iMac that lowers the resolution too low to effectively edit anything. The big difference between the machines is the graphics card. I'm not exactly sure why RT Extreme would rely on CPU for video playback. I just assumed that would be an operation of the graphics card.
