strange problem with fcp on my G4 Can't Post

I have fcp 4.5 on my G4. I don't use it very much....only for small projects. It works just fine...until today.

Now, all of a sudden, when I open the color panel, it freezes. For example, if I want to change the color of my font and click on the color, the color panel and palette wheel opens, but it freezes. Everything freezes. No spinning beachball....just a freeze.

G4 dual, 1 ghz
1 gig ram
OS 10.3.3
FCP 4.5

It was working fine last night. The only thing that happened since last night was a power outage. But I doubt if that caused the color picker to go out. I've restarted, trashed preferences. Any other suggestions?

thanks...velma

Did you have this computer on a UPS when the power went out? If not and the computer went off with the power then that could be the source of your problems. I would try running repair permissions and if you have disk warrior run that too.

Re: [velma] strange problem with fcp on my G4 [In reply to] Can't Post

Velma,

I had a similar issue last week when we had an outage. Strange things started happening. I noticed things freezing on me (motion was going slower than usual) and compressor refused to open (crashed every time). I had an idea to check the processes (Activity Monitor in Utilities) and there were about 4 instances of compressor running even though I had closed it down. It may not help but worth checking to make sure nothing is affecting this. Also, there was a useful article on the Ken Stone webpage about trashing preferences. The quote on the page read " Over 5,000 years ago Confucius wrote: "If you are toiling away, you have changed nothing and FCP heads South on you, then it is time to trash your FCP Preferences." This is a pretty destructive, last resort fix, but for me, I didn't have a lot of preferences setup and as you say you don't use it much I would imagine you don't have either, well, nothing you can't reset like capture method, scratch disks etc. quite easily.
Velma, you can find the full article here

Good luck.
Sean.

Thanks, Sean. But like I said in my original post, I had already trashed my prefs. As a matter of fact, I trashed them twice. Still no go.

Sorry Velma, read too much of the first part and neglected the last part.
Hope you get it sorted.
Sean.

Re: [carnicelli] strange problem with fcp on my G4 [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks, Bill. I forgot to put in my original post that I had repaired permissions a bazillion times. Someone once told me that anytime a program crashes, you should repair permissions. And it crashed (or froze up) on me several times, so I repaired permissions each time.

You'll never believe this but.....

The last time it froze up, I restarted and just left it there....posted the problem here....and went and took my dog out to the dog park. I was gone about 2 hours. I intended to run DW when I got back.

However, when I got back, I tried it one more time and it was fine. Go figure. Maybe it just needed to sit there and think about it for a while. I'm clueless.

Lesson learned: I'm contacting Apple to suggest they put on their list of suggested strategies for fixing computer problems to "take a dog out to a dog park for a while!" Tongue

Thank you! This tip is going to save me a ton of tech service money!Wink
I'm glad to hear that everything is working again. It's so frustrating when things go bad for no apparent reason.
