Well I totally don't fit your profile (I'm on a dualie and use Boris RED instead of AE) but I'll offer this:

A Quad is a fast machine as long as it's set up correctly and the application can utilize it.

A more optimized Quad would probably include the 7800 video board and significantly more RAM since you're (hopefully) trying to feed four 64-bit processors. Having said that, the base set-up is a long way from "puny".

Launch OS X Activity monitor and watch My Tasks with the CPU view selected. On a dual G5, the total bandwidth is expressed as 200%, so I'm assuming a Quad would use 400%. If AE is indicating 150% or something like that, then it's not tasking the machine effectively and that would explain your problem. If, on the other hand, AE is using 300% or more you'll want to look further at your system configuration.

When they released those benchmarks for the new Intel Macs that showed them as faster in Motion than the G5 dualies, I ran the test on my system. My numbers were really ho-hum but when I looked at Activity Monitor I saw that Motion (at least in this benchmark) was using around 85-90%, or less than one processor. It's not my machine, it's Motion!

Adobe has had a few disappointments for Mac users in the recent past - Pshop CS2 has performed poorly for some users, etc. There are questions about how quickly they will supply universal binaries to support the newer systems. Don't get down on your system until you determine it's actually the system's problem.
