Business Expenses Question, Please help! Can't Post

Hi all,

I am starting my wedding videography business. I have taken a name and registered it. I have also just taken a deposit for my first project. I'm told this technically means that I can "expense" everything I buy for the business now. Here is my problem. I want to use my personal credit card to buy equipment. I currently have no money in the business. So I can't just pay my self back for the business purchase this year. Is there a way to write an IOU or something from the business to myself so that the business can write off the equipment purchase at the end of the year?

If this sounds confusing, let me know and I'll attempt to explain better.

Thanks,
Rocket

It's OK if you don't have a credit card in your business's name. I just got one myself, after over ten years of running a part time business. It'll make it easier to track your finances, though, if you use one of your credit cards ONLY for business expenses.

You should open a bank account for your business.

Every new business needs startup capital. This can come from personal savings, from a business loan from a bank, from personal loans from friends or relatives, or simply from your Mastercard. For a sole proprietorship, the distinction between your personal finances and the business's can become kind of fuzzy, because you ARE the business. But if you keep a record of your business expenses and income (as opposed to your personal expenses and income), you should be fine, even if those expenses are paid for by your personal credit card.

Thanks! I was hoping it was kinda fuzzy. I don't know if I will be able to pay of the CC in the first year for my start up purchase and it is not a company CC.

Cheers,
Rocket

Assumung you are not incorporated, you do not need any IOU's or other paperwork. Just keep track of what you spend in expenses.

We use are personal accounts all the time, it is OK. The company logs it as a long term liability and we get paid back from the company when we want. (Usually when you take a draw and the company makes a profit).

Sometimes is not convenient to purchase with a business check. You need to decide how you want to structure your business (Sole Proprieter, Partnership, Incorporated, LLC, etc.) Then get the propery Tax ID numbers, state business license and open up a business checking account.

Oh, don't forget to get business cards. Bam you are in business. Go shoot and edit and have a blast.
