Charge Fee for Soccer Games Can't Post

Hi, i've been asked to film and edit a 9 and under age group soccer team. The coach is fairly new to the game and he want's to see what each player is doing right and wrong. I will using 2 cameras and I need to know how much would i charge this guy for 1 game. I am doing around 5 but i would like to know the price or one game. The price should include, quality, time to film, time to edit, and amount of a dvd. Please contact me if you know anything about this. Also, if anybody else has experience with filming sports please tell me what you did in the past. Thanks!

I see no reason to shoot film. DV would be fine. Charge your regular hourly or half day rate.
Also just stay with your houly rate for editing and authoring. Each game/episode should come in around $2k (assuming you spend no more than a day on post-production.)

Grin:
$2K may be right for the amount of hours involved, but I don't think a team of "9 and under" players is going to spring for that kind of money.
Jeff: Use a single camera. Don't do any editing at all. The coach will want to see the tape right after the game, not three days or three weeks later. Charge him $100 per game. Then, if you want, pitch an "end of season highlights" tape, short edited clips from the existing footage, combined with photos of the team members and a nice background music track. Sell these to the parents (or through the sponsoring organzization) at $50 each.
Not a lot of money in this. It's usually a labor of love done by one of the parents.
Regards,
Doug Graham

Re: Charge Fee for Soccer Games [In reply to] Can't Post

Jeff, I was in a similar situation recently, I walked into a soccer dome located in my town and spoke to the owner about shooting the matches or individuals on a per game basis. My thoughts were to do it here and there for $100 or so cash on the barrelhead, just for extra walking around money. It was going to be a very unregimented thing. Well he started talking about shooting every single game, match, tournament, etc every single saturday for the whole season. Then it turned into an editing situation as well. Turns out that I would have to shoot from 8am to 8pm every saturday, then put each game on it's own master tape, title it, then run multiple dubs. I sat down and figured it out and I would have had to spend somewhere from 40-60 HOURS per week, and guess what? There was no guarantee of tape sales after all that work. So my little idea of extra spending money blew up in my face to a huge production that was not a guarantee of making one cent. I explained it to him, and we parted amicably. If it's just a straight shoot and turn over the tape deal, then charge them $100-200, and be done with it.

Re: Charge Fee for Soccer Games Can't Post

My experience has been mostly with shooting football games.
I have shot for the last 4 years a freshman high school football game.
I have shot the scrimmages, and all the games. I charge no fee but sell
highlight tapes/DVDs at the banquet to parents. I have averaged about $800
in sales each year but as far as being profitable, its a bust.
I do it for the coach whom I've known since our high school years,
it supports our local high school, and I just like having the
opportunity to do it.
Just this year he has mentioned to me an expense account that could
help me cover expenses. It has taken 4 years to get to this point
with the team, but it takes time to build a good reputation and
appreciation.
Good Luck,
John
