Copyrighted music and non-profit fundraiser... Can't Post

I belong to a bike club and we are having a fund raiser in a few months. They are charging admission, but all the money goes to the non-proif org. Part of the evening will be a video contest (as many guys take video of their rides). I will be entering a video I've made that has some music off movie soundtracks. This got me thinking. What does the law say about this? Until now I've just shown my videos to a few friends or posted them on a web page. Maybe thats a no-no too with copyrighted music. Since this is an activity that require payment to get into it is probably much different.
So, does the non-profit status matter? If I need to get permission how do I do that?
Any help is appreciated.

Hi Doug,
If this is strictly for private use, you can use it , but since it is for
fund raising, unless you have premission from the copyright holder
dont even try, you could put yourself and the non-profit company in a
copyright lawsuit.
You might try to contact the holder and explain the circumstance they might givr you
written permission without royalties,
Although they might not want to be linked to non-profit organization,
I have run into this situation, its easier to find like music royalty free.
Good luck, jes

Thanks for the information. I'm looking into some of these music programs that are pretty affordable. I don't stand much chance of getting permission (music is from the movie "The Rock") unless I actually get an email through to someone who'll actually read it much less do anything about it.

As long as you only use 28 second clips or less you'll be good. You can
also loop it as long as it's only 28 seconds or less of the song.
Since your a non profit most copyright holders will give you some slack
especially if they see you don't have millions they can sue you for.
Everyone does what your talking about and it helps them sell more records.

That would be infringement [In reply to] Can't Post

Where in the copyright law does it say you can use 28 seconds?
I have looked through the US Gov copyright web site and
do not find any such exception.
See "Copyright Basics" at
http://www.copyright.gov/circs/circ1.html
There are a lot of myths about copyright laws and here's a
page about these myths
http://www.templetons.com/brad/copymyths.html
If you want to read a book about this. look up "Copyright and Clearance"
on Amazon. Good luck
