Corporate ... traveling and additional charges Can't Post

I just completed a job where I was out of state for 5 days. All I charged them was my normal fee, hotel, and meals. They took care of my airline tickets. In some ways this seems fine, but I keep wondering if I shouldn't have charged more since I'm away from home every night.

I did the same job for them locally and charged the same. Only difference was that they didn't have the extra meal and lodging expenses.

This looks to be a yearly gig and I don't want to make a huge deal out of it, but it just felt like if I'm gone for a week there would be additional compensation.

Comments and opinions appreciated.

I think it's called Opportunity cost - how much money could you earn doing other things in that time? If you could do a job each day you are away, you need to cover that "lost" income in your fee. If it is a quiet spell, then any income is ok and do it the way you have done. I just lost out on working with anotyer VU regular because the numbers didn't add up. To travel to cover a 2 day wedding meant being unavailable for 4 days where my team could have covered 8 other weddings and brought in twice as much money. I am learning to sort out the resume jobs from the paying jobs! Not that I missed much. Another bride from that group was asking whether £1200 was too much for 2 days travelling around the country to different locations with a 2 man crew!

Sparky...

I think that if you're making your optimum day rate AND the client is
paying all your expenses while you're on the road...why, that's just
fine! It's true that occasionally while you're working at home, you
can do better than your day rate -putting in looooong days and
racking up the billable hours -but why (unless you're putting in
huge amounts of time on location or working all weekend) mess
with a good thing? In fact, I once had a corporate client who
had me on the road about 10 days a month, like clockwork, and
I ended up giving them a small discount on my day rate, simply
because it was pretty much guaranteed income!
