: I am getting ready to make a demo tape. Does anybody out there have some advice on what I can put in the demo tape? I've tried several approaches. My first couple demos were essentially a commercial for my video production business. Subsequent versions were more like montages. My latest one (at http://www.goldthread.com/samples.html) is laid out in distinct sections, pitching to different needs. My thought is, clients will call me if what they see matches, in their mind, very closely with what they are wanting. Kind of like dating, if the person matches your image of what you're looking for, you fall in love instantly. I'm wanting my demo tape to create that kind of response. The one hard and fast rule I know about demo tapes is "less is more". It's very hard to edit your own stuff down to be as sparse as it needs to be. Keep showing it to other people. While you're showing it to them, if they are getting bored, then it's too long. It's like the scene in "A River Runs Through It" where the father is teaching the son how to write--"Half as long". "Again, half as long". Steve S.
