Do you hand over master tapes?

I emailed this somewhat unknown band who lives outside the US who was coming to the US to do a benefit children's concert, a week before their gig. I told them that I'd do the work "on spec" since it was a children's benefit and didn't want to siphon funds away from the kids. All that I'd ask was to pay for my materials (2 mini DV tapes, 2 Hi8 tapes, BetaSP 60 min tape) and we'd split the sales of videos, tapes, CD's (30 band, 30 me, 40 kids.) Since they didn't respond to the email, I showed up at the concert anyway since it was 3 blocks away. After presenting my offer to them, they said they wanted me to hand over the 4 camera master tapes when I left without payment for materials or pay them $25,000 for exclusive rights to use the tapes for whatever I wanted, including sales. Additionally, after handing over the master tapes, they wanted the option to take them to their own editor, and wanted exclusive distribution and marketing rights. Then they'd send me a VHS copy for my own use. They said that they were afraid that I'd start marketing products without their approval or revenue to them. Therefore, they wanted complete control. I walked out without pushing a button. Man, try to do some kids and a newbie band a favor! What chutzpah! Do any of you hand over the camera master if the work is for hire? Other than the hourly rate ($100/hr), you've totally sold yourself out for any future editing or marketing potential. Thanks.
