Have Avid need work! Can't Post

I have two Avid XpressDV setups and have worked in this industry for many years and would like to find new clients after moving my business to Santa Monica in Southern California.
I have made many corporate video productions for numerous clients including training tapes for Sony.
I also transfer super 8 and standard 8 to MiniDV or DVD.
A new regional start means I need new clients... Any help out there ? Please try to help I need to eat!
Thank you
regards

Re: Have Avid need work! Can't Post

Hello John,
Welcome to the most competitve market in the world for what we do, Los Angeles. Unfortunately your avid set-ups won't give you much of an edge here. An avid rep once told me that (on average) there are 1,000 avids per square mile in Hollywood (something like that). LA is so competitive that many people are willing to work, edit, shoot, whatever for free. Some of those have access to big studio equipment. I have a cousin who is an editor for Disney Studios in Burbank, on occasion he'll do some freelance stuff with equipment that would hurt your heart to see. To further complicate things, this is a town that you have to be plugged into real well to get the big jobs because 1) It is unlikely that you are going to under bid the establishment players here for a gig. There's to many layers, to many big names. 2) As far as the quick money jobs, everyone here knows at least 10 people who edit, shoot, write screenplays and so forth. What's to do? Outside of the obvious things like networking, joining various user groups etc. You'll need to think outside the box (way outside the box). Here's one idea. Consider leveraging the prestige of your location in other reachable markets. For example filming school plays in Mojave or shooting commercials for small businesses in Barstow, etc. It might not be glamorous and I'm not saying that you won't find competition there because you will but in LA you are one in a million editors and to survive let alone eat regularly you are going to need to be very very creative. I am not saying to write off LA, I am saying don't just limit yourself to it. This is just my opinion, others may see it differently.

Good Luck
