How long should a promotional video be? Can't Post

I will be working on a promotional video for a friend who has a construction business. He wants a video that he can send to potential clients. Would anyone know how long this type of video should be. 12 minutes?....20 minutes?...
I would appreciate any advice you could give me.

12 minutes is far too long for a marketing video. Look how long TV commercials
are and yet they can make you laugh, cry and buy. People have very short attention spans
and this is a sales message. A long business video will rarely be watched in its entirety.
Long marketing videos are the number one common mistake by new producers.
Always better to leave them wanting more than to see their attention drift.

Whats the difference between a commercial and a marketing video [In reply to] Can't Post

My question is what is the difference between a commercial and a marketing video? Should a marketing video be 30 seconds like a commercial.

A commericial is broadcast on TV. A marketing video is usually offered on VHS, DVD or
CD ROM. A marketing video can be any length as long as the viewers will watcht
which is not very long. A TV commercial must be 30 seconds (actually 29 seconds 15 frames) \
or 60 seconds or 15 seconds.
A marketing video may be shown as an "endless loop" at a trade show. It may be mailed
to prospective customers etc. See the book "Marketing with Video" elsewhere on this site for
more information on the difference and how to produce a marketing video.

Hi Alma,
A commerical has to sell you in less than 30 seconds, a marketing spot will
show the services you offer as well as product you have done in the past.
Do not make your marketing video longer than 3minutes, as Hal suggests, make then want to contact you.
A thirty second marketing video with a url is a waste of time as most want to see it than and not have to run to a computer to see your product on the internet.
I have done many videos for marketing from mom and pop stores, car dealers to larger internet companies and this is
what seems to work best.
Always follow up on any thing you send out to potential clients be it a video, a CD
or audio.
hope this helps.Jes
