How to charge for cross country travel time? Can't Post

Hi folks...
I have a long time client who wants to have us shoot on both coasts. The east coast shoot is an hour away, so that's easy, but the schedule calls for us to fly out to LA the next day, and then shoot for a half day the day after that, and then fly back here. They will pick up our air fare (crew of two), but that half day shoot in California will still eat up most of two full days because of the travel time. How do I charge for this time? Is there any industry rule of thumb? Your thoughts are welcome. Thanks!

Charge your day rate. I dont know if you have set your own guide lines for
day rate ex: $750.00 dayrate=7.5 hrs., $500.00 1/2 dAYrate=4 HRS ETC
In your case I would charge two full days plus all expenses: food etc..
Just because you are traveling doesnt mean you dont charge.
Good luck, and the weather is fine here in beautiful Southern California.

The "industry standard" is that if YOU pay for the tickets, charge your day rate and a per-deim fee for misc. costs. If THEY buy your ticket, take it graciously and charge a per-deim for food, misc. and lodging, but don't charge for airtime.

I charge half my normal day rate per travel day, or day that I am not otherwise able to work due to travel; i.e. arriving on the east coast at 9AM on a flight from the Far East. Technically, the travel is over but its not a day I would be able to work after a sixteen hour flight.

We charge 1/2 day rate for personnel and equipment, unless the travel is over the weekend in which case we only charge for personnel. The client is expected to pick up all travel expenses. If we have to charge meals or hotels to our credit cards, we tack on 20-40% surcharge.
