How to design a website? Can't Post

With all the technical expertise I have, with all I know, I am a bit ashamed to admit that I am 95% in the dark as to how to create a website. I need to learn how to do this. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good book or video that can help get me started?

Not wanting to put the cart before the horse, but how in the world do you all put samples of your work on your website? That blows me away!

... And to make matters worse I'm a young guy ... not 75 years old. I should know this by now, but .... oh, well...

Don't feel bad. I'm among the ignorant when it comes to web site design, too. Always been meaning to correct that, but haven't got A Round Tuit yet.
There are several ways to shortcut the process. In order of decreasing cost (and decreasing beauty, originality, and functionality in the results), they are:
- Hire a website designer to build you a unique site.
- Hire a website designer to customize a website from a portfolio of ready-made templates
- Use a ready-made template and customize it yourself. Templates are often available from web hosting companies, or from independents like Lance Gray at PixelPops.

Re: [Blackbird Video] How to design a website? [In reply to] Can't Post

I have a friend who created my original web site in Flash. He was too busy to update as I needed.

So he suggested I download the Dreamweaver MX (http://www.macromedia.com/software/dreamweaver/) 2005 30 day free trial. I did.

After 30 days I had a basic HTML web site set up. Meets my needs and I can update whenever I want.
Of course I made a few calls to him asking "how do I...".

Now I need to buy the full version. Unsure

See site here: http://www.cinematic-memories.com

Best of all, I didn't have to pay anyone to do it.

Cool

Re: [Brian Dorr] How to design a website? [In reply to] Can't Post

Hello Brian, your website is amazing... considering is basic html only. Our studio website has been made by a professional designer, but he was going to create a full asp site and I stopped him because I wanted to be free to modify the contents without calling him everytime, asp is not so easy to edit on the fly.

So I asked him to convert all he could from asp to html so I can modify everything just using a text editor.

The result is the web site in my signature, a mix of flash, asp and basic html. It is not cool as yours but I consider it very functional. I hope in the future to upgrade to a full flash site but when this will happen probably I'll have to call a designing company. Do you know any with reasonable rates but high quality results?

My wife created mine for me. She bought a software called Web Professional at Best Buy for $69.00 and it does all the html codes for you. It's really simple to use - you basically just drag & drop.

Great job on the website Brian!

Check out this resource where you can build a web site for your business in 3 minutes.
http://www.bigwebpages.com

Also here is a tip. The web sites are free for 30 days.
So, after a wedding create a free site, upload a few video still captures, and wish the new bride and groom best wishes from "AAA wedding videos" etc. This is a nice free bonus gift for the new couple from you. After the 30 day trial , all files will be deleted, and you will never be spammed.

A few years ago, I found this cheap software called Web Studio Express... cost $12.00
Spent a few hours playing around with it, and here are the results:

it's been up about three or four years now. And Lord knows I'm no expert at web design.

Re: [Blackbird Video] How to design a website? [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm not at artistic as some of you guys, but I was a web developer before I got into video (and I still own a hosting company). Your website can offer online reservations, accept payments and have an all-inclusive info form for your clients to fill in and update. If you go strictly HTML, the only way for clients to email you is if you expose your email address to spammers. Also, HTML cannot do the dynamic/interactive things mentioned above.

It seems that many of you can do a great job on the looks of your site (and that's the most important thing), and some of you may be able to do some server-side code, which is good. If anyone needs a contact form that does not expose your email address, or wants an online date-checker/reservation/payment system - I could set you up with my code for free if you host with our company (www.SmBizHosting.com), or for a small charge if you prefer to host elsewhere. Note though that your server must support various PHP/MySQL features.

I've often been surprised by receiving deposits from new clients I hadn't even heard of before. I have my system set so it won't accept deposits less than five days before a date, and it won't accept two reservations for the same weekend.

Good luck with your new website!

Blackbird ...

learn EVERYTHING YOU CAN about the internet and site development- I PROMISE you .. that is where video is headed... I took a Dreamweaver course online from my local college for only 80 bucks - and it was a huge help in developing and designing my new site...

Go for the gold - and dont be scared of the internet- it's just a bunch of files on a big computer that everyone can see!

Hi Blackbird! It really depends on how far you want to go with this and how much time you have. There are a lot of aspects that go into creating a good site, even more to create an EFFECTIVE site. At the same time, web development is a very enjoyable to learn; there are many different (fun) technologies to learn and master and an almost infinite number of ways to combine them to create something unique.

So if you are short on time and want something as soon as possible, your best bet is to hire a designer. I recommend in either case that you do as much of your own research as possible and determine what exactly it is you want before either you or your designer start working on anything. As far as prices goes, a simple site ain't that expensive, contact some technical school/college students. They'll be looking for experience, often for free (and often have that drive to create something really unique to impress you).

Of course, if you have the time, you could keep a few hours free each day (or weekend) and learn the basics by yourself. It's NOT that hard, but it can take some time. If you are more of a visual user or come from a graphic design background, some application like Dreamweaver can be a good investment. It won't create you the best of sites right from the start, but it'll give you the option to quickly create a site without the need to dive into the little details of the code.

If you want to take the code first approach, you can find some good starting tutorials at http://www.w3schools.com (it's by the same people that maintain the HTML standard used to code websites) and move on from there. Do a search on Google for HTML tutorials, etc. Play around, you don't need much to start (infact all you need is Notepad hehe). If you like it, get a book, etc.

Finally, my best advice in actually designing a site is something I tell all of my clients: always remember who your target audience is and what you are trying to achieve with the site. A full Flash site might look amazing, but is it actually effective? Can a user easily find what they want? Can they quickly find your contact info? How is your content organized (menu)? Etc. Those are far more important questions than the graphical aspects of a site. Keep it simple!

Hope this helps. I'd probably be more helpfull with some more specific questions though.

Considering the time we spend on crucifying Uncle Charlie it should be pretty apparent at this point that we should be hiring someone who knows how to do it. There is really no way around it. Regardless of how much time you are willing to spend on this it will not look the way it “should” look.

Re: [Blackbird Video] How to design a website? [In reply to] Can't Post

Well, I am happy to report that I finally took the time and made the plunge and hooked up with GoDaddy.com. I paid $35.00 for 470 templates and then chose one and started personalizing it. Iy is oerfect for my needs. Simple. I am not sure what I can NOT do yet, because I have not tried to do anything too complicated.

The only thing that pissed me off is they charged me $50.00 as a one-time charge to upload the site. After paying a year in advance and $ for the templates I was not expecting that, but I can make all the changes I want and upload again and again, so I guess it's no big deal.

I would like to figure out how to add VIDEO to my site.

Re: [Blackbird Video] How to design a website? [In reply to] Can't Post

Hello:

Sorry I didn't see this post sooner, lot of good info on it. Also, I would have suggested pretty much what you did do, only I went with Register.com and .mac to set my sites up. Both are set up with stills from our wedding productions, and the links, clips, etc. once I learned to use my Mac to compress them, were very easy to set up via my .mac account.
If you are NOT on a Macintosh, I am totally ignorant regarding the PC side of things, but if you DO happen to use Mac, then you CAN, once you get all your resources set up, saved for web, etc. you can utilize iLife'06 to get some decent clips going.
If you want to see what a total web site and clips novice managed with a little help from .mac and register.com, go to www.corelann.com and/or www.californiaweddingcinema.com and/or www.petvideoproductions.com
The nice thing about this is we've had compliments on our sites from pro site builders AND clients alike, and we can update them with ease to our heart's content.

Macromedia has Contribute 3. I hear good reviews about it and come recommended by Leo Laporte, a tech guru.

If you don't want to do it yourself, find a teenager to design a site for you. They earn some great extra money and it doesn't cost you the same as hiring a designer. Most "yoots" <g> know all about the latest technology and programs if they're into this sort of thing.
