Just getting started & Web audio/video streaming Can't Post

I am just getting started with developing a business plan for a video production company. I've been researching as much as I can, but I'd appreciate some input about the bare bones approach to starting. This would help me to develop a plan (unless there is someone that has one to share).

Also...I desire to have audio/video streaming on the site. 1st of all, are there any suggestions regarding hosting or is it better to host/have built my own server? Secondly, what technology/software is needed to best make this happen? Lastly, what am I missing (I know - broad question).

So far I have determined the camera (Cannon) and the computer system (Mac) with Final Cut Pro and After Effects. Suggestions for needed lighting, extra mics, etc? I don't have much income to start with, so if I can implement a good system in phases while I start working that would be great.

Experts, please share with a newbie :)

Thanks

How do you eat an elephant? Answer: One bite at a time.

But, you're starting at the wrong end of this particular elephant. The first thing you should do before you start buying equipment for your new business is to decide exactly....and I mean EXACTLY, in great detail, just what that business is. In short, you need a business plan.

A business plan sets down who your clients are going to be, what kind of video production you're going to do, what the market is like, what your pricing structure will be, how you will market your services, how much money you'll need to get started, and to keep going. And that's just the beginning.

I know of video production businesses (highly successful ones!) that consist of one person, a telephone, and a word processor. All else is rented as needed for each project. I know others that have several employees, and some who subcontract most of the work to others. I know one wedding videographer who charges $495 for his services, and another who commands an average price of $8,000.

Figure out WHAT you want to do. Figure out how much it'll cost, and how much it'll make (I know, they'll be estimates. But if you do your homework, they can be pretty close to reality). THEN start thinking about what equipment you'll need.

I appreciate your response, but if you'll notice, the first thing I stated was that I was trying to develop a plan. A business plan is like a road map and unless I have a clearly documented one, I will get lost. That I know - that's why I was trying to find samples in this field to assist in getting a better understanding of this business. The challenge is that since this field is new to me, I am challenged as to taking my idea further - determining price points, etc. I happen to know what I'd like to buy because that is part of the research, but purchases aren't happening until I get the plan worked through.

It's great to have a mic and a lighting package and ... all picked out. But assuming you have a camera and an editor, go shoot yourself a demo reel, and go find some customers. Only buy the equipment that you piicked out when you actually have a job that needs that particular thing. You might have tens of thousands in cash flow and never need lights. Or never even need a 3ccd camera for that matter. Go find a customer, and then find another one.

Okay, great...so, tell us a little more about your plan, and we'll try to help you with some equipment choices that may be suitable.

Re: [videobear] Just getting started & Web audio/video streaming [In reply to] Can't Post

I too am looking for help in a similar area of this. I already have the equipment that I need for the most part, since I've been shooting video for about 3 years now as an assistant. Now as I try to start my own business doing this, my MAIN problem right now is marketing using my webpage. I really, REALLY need to figure out how to put video on my webpage. I have my footage all edited and ready to go. I just need to know how to get it on the net. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just render it as a WMV or QT file and upload it via ftp like any other file. This will give you a "progressive download" for most visitors which is not quite streaming. It is very straightforward.

Okay, I think I finally got the ftp thing working. But its taking forever to upload my video to my site. Like 8 hours it says. I have Compressor on my Mac, but I'm not quite sure which settings I should use to optimize uploading time. Any suggestions?

Smaller image = smaller file size.
shorter video = smaller file size
lower bit rate = smaller file size
lower resolution = smaller file size
You need to find settings that meet your requirements. One time upload speeds don't matter, but if it runs choppy/slow or takes too long to download, it is useless.

Minutes mean nothing to me. How big is the file afer rendering? And how long is the video? When I render WMV for the web, I use a 256kb preset (in Vegas) for DSL, and a 64kb preset for modem users. Image quality is not as good as DVD but it is the web.

I think I got it figured out! I couldn't find a way to output to a wmv file ony my mac. But instead I just output to an mpeg-1 and then changed the extension to wmv, and it seems to have worked. Thanks for the help galt!

Well that is not an ideal solution, but if you are content for now, all is well.

Nope. Cleaner's not there. I see a folder that says Cleaner Settings. But no icon to actually start up the application itself.
