Just starting - how much to charge? Can't Post

I am in the process on starting my videography business. My primary focus will be on business videos: promotion, training, commercials, etc. My target date for starting is September 1st.

A couple weeks ago, I made a short (3 minute) video for our city's downtown revitalization committee. It was a freebie, but should give me a lot of exposure with area business leaders. It appears to have worked, although faster than I expected. I just received a call from a local marketing company. They would like to meet with me next week to discuss using me as a freelance producer on some of their upcoming projects.

I was very upfront about my businesses start-up status, which did not bother them at all, since they like what they've seen so far. I know during the meeting, the question of rates will come up. I don't have a clue what to say (I thought I'd have a few months to figure that out...)

What is a fair rate for a start-up producer? I don't want to sound cheap, yet I don't want to set my price beyond my abilities. I suppose that would depend a lot on prior experience. Well, I don't have much with video! My background is radio - 12 years on-air and in management. I know marketing and I know what businesses need as far as promotion and image are concerned. I'm very comfortable with my technical and creative ability, but I don't have the video experience to back it up.

I'm in a rural area where professional videographers are few and far between. Sure, there are a few wedding and event videographers that work out of their home, but virtually no one local focusing on the business community.

So, again - what is a good starting rate for someone in my shoes?

Thanks,
Chris

That's just an impossible question. But it is easier to offer discounts than to raise rates later. This is especailly true in a small market. I don't think you need to quote rates at your meeting. Just dodge that question by referring to "project-based" rates. For the meeting coming up, I would say things like "I am willing to work with you on budgets for specific projects until we get to know each other." "I can adapt to the needs of each situation (or client)." "I can work with a variety of budgets and expectations." Video production is not about rates. It is about providing a quality result within the budget of a client. You can do a 30sec TV spot for $500 or $500,000, but it will not be the same ad. You need to understand their project expectations and budget range first and then propose the right project approach to fit those goals.

Wow, what a great answer... I think I'll simply repeat that verbatim when they ask! Wink

Thanks,

This is the problem with creative works, you start low in order to get client but then client doens't want to pay more, so tell them this is what you normally charge but since this is our first job together you can get 10% discount. If you discount much more then thell think you're pulling prices out of your a$$.

Anyway, repeat what the previous poster said, that you'll deliver quality based on budget. And try to charge at least $75/hr for each hour you work on the thing. May seem like much but when you factor in hours thinking aobut this, driving, meeting, reading VU forums etc. it goes down to 30/40%.

Hal sells a great course on this whole topic -- http://www.videouniversity.com/course.htm It goes into a potload more detail than we can cover in a forum thread.

Follow Doug's advice. Buy Hal's course. http://www.videouniversity.com/course.htm Tons of great information that I use every day producing corporate video. I have had the course for several years now. I still refer back to it for inspiration and information.
