Legal Video question Can't Post

Is anyone here involved in the business of Legal/Deposition type video work? I just read the article in the latest Video Systems magazine, and its something thats crossed my mind for some time now. Just have no idea how to get into it. How do I find out what the market is like for this service in my area (Appleton/Green Bay, WI)? Do I contact a local courthouse, lawyers offices, court reporters association? Am looking into the Court Video Certification from AGCV. Has anyone gone through the material from VU here that is for sale? I'd consider purchasing it if it comes highly recommended. If anyone has any comments or advice, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Brandon

It's something I'd be interested in learning more about too. But I think in Canada, the Justice Department already has people on salary for that. I'm not sure if they outsource to independent videographers. Anybody in Canada do this type of work, especially in Quebec?

Since you haven't gotten many replies, I guess I'll chip in.

We do a few depositions - 1 or 2 a month, sometimes more, but we're starting to promote that service a little more.

For us, most of our work comes through court reporters, but we have gotten several depos direct from the lawyers. That would probably be your 2 biggest sources. However, we've also gotten a few from some nation-wide - I guess you would call them brokerage companies - who basically provide this service to court reporters and lawyers then find a local company to shoot them. Right now we're doing one for a California outfit who called us directly to shoot it. We shoot it, do some paperwork, and send them the tapes, they take care of everything else.

It can be pretty lucrative work, but very boring. You need some very good audio equipment and a good camera. I normally like to use my DSR250 since I can get up to 4.5 hours on a tape, but this national company wanted us to use MiniDV to shoot their stuff with.

We haven't gotten any certification in this field yet, since it's not required in our area, but some lawyers want a certified person to do it, so that's on our list of things to do. I'm not sure if that's true in all areas or not.

Hal has a detailed package on how to get into this field. Check the Store link on this site.

Certification isn't required, but whether you take a course or not, you must know the requirements in your state...they differ. In most cases, you'll need equipment that can record the date and time on the tape (visibly, on the screen). For depositions, you will not be allowed to edit the tape in any way. You may be asked to appear in court to play the deposition tape.
