Looking to get into video production.. advice?? Can't Post

Hi there.
I am 17 years old, in grade 12. I've been working at a the local cable station since I was 14... Yep. They started paying me when I was 15...
(I live in a town of about 15,000)
Anyway, Everyone there thinks I do a really good job, any my knowledge of the technical issues is unmatched by almost everyone there, My editing is excellent, and I'm the "Voice of the station" as I do all the voice-overs for promos and commercials. I have a really good V/O voice.
I shoot City Council meetings live, shoot news stories and do interviews, edit shows, do some in master control, producing.. Pretty much anything that anyone would do at a small cable station.
I would like to go into video production as a career, but I have one major concern:
THE MONEY!
I know you don't make much working for someone else, but what are you guys making who are independent? I don't want to be doing weddings for the rest of my life, I'd rather do commercials and TV shows. I'd like to make about $60,000 a year. (Canadian) Am I way out of whack?
If you were my age again, would you get into it?
Thanks a lot everyone for your responses!
Andrew

Hi Andrew, WOW what a great background for getting into the Video Production business. I just began reading a book called The E-Myth by Micheal E. Gerber. It's s must read for budding entrepreneurs. Also check ot Hal's course here at VU on
Corporate Video Production. It'll save you time in setting up you business. And since you already have a taste of it you'll be able to relate well to it's suggestions etc.
Good Luck!

Hi Andrew,
I agree with John that you have a terrific start! To answer your question,
you can make that kind of money in this business. To do so, you will
eventually need to work in a larger market and or at the network
level. With your background, I doubt that you'll have any trouble.
This is a people business so when you're ready, you will probably
want to move where the action is - a larger city. Just by networking,
and being persistent you will meet people who are doing what you
want to do. You must be willing to start at a lower postion than
you are presently doing. But that's temporary until people can
judge whether you're a good worker with the right attitude.
You might want to check my article
"Finding the Right Video Business"

There are sections on Freelance Technician/Artist as well as
Television that may help you.
Feel free to contact me if I can help you. We're all pulling for you!
