My first go at a promo video! Can't Post

Hey all,
I just finished up my first promo video. I worked at a YMCA camp this summer and I just went around to the various program areas and shot video to edit. The clip hasn't very good resolution since it is on youtube, but you can get the jist of it.

Please criticize creatively!Wink

Pointers? Hints?

Thanks!

Keith,

I'd like to see a lot more close-ups of kids faces - laughing, trying, playing. I would have made a different music choice. "It's fun to stay at the YMCA" has different connotations that may not fit the message of the video. There was some nice shooting, but I would try for more candid close-ups of kids having fun.

I agree with Hal ... more close-ups and different selection of songs. YMCA is great at wedding receptions, but the song was not written with the this type of video in mind. Wink

Also ... the majority of the clips were too long ... too much panning back and forth. Long clips from a wide angle make it harder to hold the attention of the viewer.

Smoother camera moves would help whether it be zooming in or pulling back. At the beginning it looked like a lot of walking around footage.

What group was the video created for? Is it for the kids to entice them to come to camp or for parents to send them or both? Always know your target audience.

Even if you don't have any type of storyboard written down ... at least have something in mind when you hit the record button. For instance on the archery range, start with a closeup of the hand on the bow and then pull back so you have a head and shoulders shot of the archer.

And lastly ... in this case shorter is better. It's good to show all the fun activities, but it can be done much quicker. Upbeat music is a good idea, but that's also why quicker cuts are needed.

I would also agree with sparky. Shots are too long, and not timed to the music. With a song like this with well defined hits, you could have this be very dynamic. Also see if you can boost the levels on the interior shots. The kids are all backlit. What kind of camera/editing equip. are you using? Try to generate energy as much as possible, and don't get caught in the trap that i get in very often which is attempting to use all of my footage just becuase I shot it.
