Trademarking sayings are tricky. You have to specify the usage - for example, obviously Donald Trump or whoever, can't go around barring people from saying "You're Fired". But he might have a slim chance of trademarking it if it is used in very specific instances like as the gimmicky motto for a reality show of the exact same premise or if his likeness is used along side it or something. If there was a specialized spelling (You're Phyr'd, for example) then he might have a better chance of trademarking the written form of that phrase. There are so many things that cannot be trademarked or copyrighted because they're commonplace things - like a yellow smiley face, for example. I do remember reading about some bloke that either tried to or did successfully trademark or copyright the number sequence "010101" as it referred to Jan. 1, 2001. Obviously you can't just go around trademarking number sequences and stuff but for the purposes of selling New Year's paraphernalia, I guess this was a legit copyright. Cheers!
