Please Answer Questionnaire Can't Post

Hi,
I'm a New York City public school student doing a special
report on the independent film scene and the opportunities
made available through the advent of digital video and
other technologies.
Would any indie filmmakers and video editors
help me out by answering all or some of the
following questions:

Here's My Scenerio:
Imagine I'm a guy coming out of film school and
I was thinking about starting my own company.
I have lots of fire and commitment. I have some
basic equipment for shooting and editing. Say I'm
interested and interested in shooting gritty docs
shorts and full lengh feature films(urban, sci-fi,
coming-of-age stuff). I want to make a living at
this but I don't have no connections and T lack
funds. (Got to pay off school loan for NYU or
Columbia).
What are my prospect in the current economy
and geogrpahic area.
1- How is the market for someone starting up
as a filmmaker or freelance video editor?
2- What sources of info on average rates for
video editors by state for 2002 (New York)
3- Is there any free reports published trade associations
for video editors by state for 2002 (New York)
4- What conditions will effect rates charge by video editors?
5- Is there industry report for sales of VHS/DVD
by independent distributors for 2002
6- What is a cult film and what distinguishes it
from other films. Is there any sources for information
on the subject?
7- Is the internet a feastible route to get started?
Such producing stuff for others people and putting
it on the web.
8- What is feastible business model?
* video resumes/ audition (for job seeker or actors)
* video archive storage (storing vhs footage on dvd)
* instructional video (shoot, edit and produce how-to's for others)

I would appreciate any expertise and insight. It would very helpful
in me producing a good report. Thank you very much.
P.S. Please forward all responses to jayvivid@yahoo.com .

(copied from my reply on creativecow.net)
First, I urge you to staff for a while and gain the much needed experience before taking this on. I'll answer what I can though:
1- How is the market for someone starting up
as a filmmaker or freelance video editor?
It won't be good until you decide which you want to do for a living.
2- What sources of info on average rates for
video editors by state for 2002 (New York)
Sites like monster.com have salary calculators. You'll start out at 30k or below.
3- Is there any free reports published trade associations
for video editors by state for 2002 (New York)
Each market has a local production handbook. Some are free some are not. I'm no expert on NY.
4- What conditions will effect rates charge by video editors?
Market, clientele, gear and talent
5- Is there industry report for sales of VHS/DVD
by independent distributors for 2002
Gotta punt here. I dunno.
6- What is a cult film and what distinguishes it
from other films. Is there any sources for information
on the subject?
Calling it such. All films have their own following. A group doesn't have to wear cloaks and chant to be a cult.
7- Is the internet a feastible route to get started?
Such producing stuff for others people and putting
it on the web.
Many have a need for media for the web. It's not any tougher of a nut to crack than any other video... and just as tough.
8- What is feastible business model?
* video resumes/ audition (for job seeker or actors)
* video archive storage (storing vhs footage on dvd)
* instructional video (shoot, edit and produce how-to's for others)
You'll find your nitch after staffing for a few years. Go out and do this and the thing you shine at the most be become the most profitable.
Have fun and good luck.
