Pricing Breakdown for "Concept Video" Can't Post

Educational Consultant wants me to shoot overview "concept video" of services she offers School Districts - I'm thinking 5K project - When I quote a price what's a reasonable breakdown of the 5K - shooting, editing, + ? travel time? Equipment use? Script development? Or do I just submit flat fee charge of 5K? Suggestions appreciated...

Well, if you pulled $5k figure out of thin air, then put down anything you want or nothing to support it. If you actually did some estimating of the time and effort and expenses that would be required for the job, then put down your planning work numbers. If you put down a breakdown, individual line items then become open for negotiations. $5k could be a great price for them or a great price for you, who knows? Maybe she wants/ needs a week of location shooting and interviews with clients in 6 cities. Maybe you need to hire actors. I don't know, and it doesn't sound like you do either.

You can't give a price until you know what it is you are going to do. Well you can, but it might not work out the way you think. Crazy

I've produced a lot of videos for school systems and other non-profit agencies as well as for businesses. I can tell you it's much better to sell the client your services on an hourly or daily basis with a definite hourly or daily rate. Scripting and preproduction planning, for instance, might go for $50 to $80 an hour. It's wise to contact the scripting and planning before you commit to the details and prices of a production because there are too many unknowns until you work on the blueprint of the production. You have to get paid for this work. There's an article
called Smart Contracts For Ambitious Producers
at
http://videouniversity.com/contarti.htm

which outlines this approach. This protects both you and the client from risky unknowns. Flat rates for video production are very risky for both you and the client. Call me if you'd like to know more.

Re: [hlanden] Pricing Breakdown for "Concept Video" [In reply to] Can't Post

I agree with Hal. A number of years ago I purchased his Letters of Agreements for Ambitious Producers and it worked like a charm. Everything is laid out plain as day for them to see, especially when the want changes, and how it's going to cost them.

I have been doing voiceover work for a producer, ("R" )and have been harping on him to use the concept. He has been resistant but is beginning to see the light, mainly because of one client who has subcontracted a job to him and doesn't want to pay "R" until he is paid by his client... yeah right..
