Producing for PBS/Cable TV? Can't Post

My partners and I are looking to make a move from the corporate project world to producing a television show for PBS or cable (along with related spin-off video products). We have developed an idea that looks very promising and I am looking for resources about producing content for TV. Ins, outs, pitfalls, etc.
Does anybody know of any good resources that discuss this topic? Books, Web sites, etc.?
For example, do we need to produce a pilot episode first or just sell the idea on paper?
I am also interested in hearing about any personal experience with the economic viability of producing television content? While the corporate world has been good to us, we are looking for something new and like the potential of television show production/related SIV production.
Thanks.
Hunter
