One of the techniques that we use is to interview several people, asking them the same basic questions, then intercut the soundbites together. This way, you don't have people on-screen for very long. When shooting "B-roll" of people, I usually only have them repeat a task for a different angle if the task is importent to the story line. Often, you can simply film a person doing several tasks, or even just looking at the camera, and use this footage for your coverage. Another technique that I like to use, is to film my interviews with two cameras, the second one being a cheap Sony miniDV camera filming from a side angle. I bump the mini-dv footage up to BetacamSP for editing and "trash" the footage in post so that it appears quite different from the primary footage that I film with our good cameras. With this method, I have cut-away footage without having to resort to shooting "B-roll". Jim Colman
